Jay, To prevent it, the centerboard probably needs shimming, out of the water job. In the meantime try dropping the centerboard down part way and see if it stops the slapping.

I read some of your excerpts online Jay, the look to be very readable. I would have guessed you spent some time in the navy though

Hi Jay,

I think the board is most stable in the down position and bringing it all the way up would give the most leverage for the waves to make it bang.

We had a problem with the banging with the board down. It was fixed quite easily with some shims added to the centerboard shaft.

You will have to lift the boat to get easy access to the centerboard.

You want the board to be quite snug on the shaft between the shims.

Goodluck.

Peter

Jay,
I had the same issue a while back and bought a shim kit..I think from Catalina Direct although I didn't see it on their website just now. I was surprised when it arrived to see that the shims were not made to be placed around the pivot, but epoxied to the front of the centerboard ahead of the pivot. I augmented my repair with a couple of large teflon washers that I placed on the pivot. They were hard to find although I finally got them at a Pool and Spa store.
Good Luck!
Willy
