I just bought a used ICOM M502 vhf. The manual says it can be connected to an appropriate gps receiver (not manufactured by ICOM) as long as it is NMEA0183 ver. 2.0. This will enable the distress signal to kick in exact positioning without taking the time to log it in. I had one such emergency last year and would like this feature as long as the reciever doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. Any ideas where I might get a used one? I think Garmin manufactures one but it about $200 and I might as well by a handheld gps Garmin 72 for cheaper, but I don't think that would tie into the ICOM. Any thoughts? Take a look at http://www.gpsdiscount.com/ for some good prices and detailed specs on new units--I can't help you on used ones... For any given model, see if it either includes or has available as an accessory a "power-data cable". It will plug into he unit and have bare leads on the other end, to provide 12V power (optionally) and NMEA inputs and outputs.
When I got my boat, I needed both GPS and Depthfinding capability. What I bought was this:
It works great for depth and fish finding, plus it has a built in map and GPS+WAAS that I connected to my DSC-VHF. I'm not sure what your needs are or what electronics you currently have, but this setup works fine for me. One note: If you go with this model, you need to order a NMEA connector cable from Eagle seperately.
A basic Garmin Etrex, mine is close to 10 years old, has 183 output and connects to my radio. Check the manual for any model you're considering, most are available at the manufacturer's website. You can probably find a handheld with NMEA 0183 output for well under $100
I bought a $50 garmin GPS-72 (craigslist) and a $12 data cable (clearance item at West Marine) for my VHF radio with DSC. I connected it up to 12VDC power and it lives in the cockpit cubbyhole whenever I'm out and about. Works great. I also use it as my backup GPS while cruising.
