I'm looking for comments/advice about World's Fair Marina in Queens. I am planning to keep my Catalina 25 there (from next spring), so I need some heads up, as far as currents, tides, sailing in that area in general, etc.
Hi Welcome to the group! If this is your first sailboat there is much to learn from the great people on this site. This was the case with me last winter.
As for the marina, i grew up not far from there and am very familiar with its locale. I assume you have a full keel boat? My belief is the marina is located to close to Shea stadium and Laguadia airport. The noise and traffic in the summer must be tough. Also the waters and sites in that area are not the best. You can however sail very quickly over to view the city skyline, but currents in the east river and boat traffic are considerable.
If i had a full keel i would opt to drive a bit further east and check out Bayside marina off the Cross Island PKwy (westbound) or still further off exit 36 of the LIE the Port Washington area. Both of these areas offer better sailing opportunities. Unfortunately as is the case on most of the North Shore the boats are moored out far from your parking area.
If you have a swing or wing keel, why not be adventurous and drive out to the South shore of LI. I sail out of Patchogue where it is a short sail to Fire Island with its fine beaches, or hug the mainland to find a great restaurant.
Next spring give me a shout and I will take you out for a sail.
Bought osmepneo through a marine dealer in Huntington and sailed her to Nyack NY through Hell Gate. On the East River we sailed faster than auto traffic on the FDR. Most of the water going down the East River comes from the constricting LI Sound where the channel narrows considerably. Further east, where the channel is wider didn't offer any significant currents, Of course any current would have been favorable for us, especially as we approached Queens.
You normal sailing ground will be east of World's Fair Marina, and my guess is they will not significantly interfere with sailing. What will interfer is the volume of pleasure boat traffic in the area.
There is a book that will give you tide information. It is published annually. It would be worthwhile getting.
Sorry I'm can't be more specific, but I wish you well on your first adventure sailing . . ..
