I'm in the process of replacing some of the teak on my 84. Has anyone replaced the wood in the companion. I've seen drawing for different pieces in CD, but nothing for the step in the opening. I see lots of plugs but not sure how it is fastened to the boat. KJ
I recently replaced some of the companionway pieces on my boat. I sent my old pieces to H and L marine Inc. they are located in california. There number is 323-636-1718. They were able to replace all the peices I sent them with new teak. I had good luck with fitting of all peices. Give them a call, they have a great catologe and web sight. Good luck, Jeff
I made a new one. The new one is much nicer than the old one.
I made a pattern using pieces of oak and cutting them to fit each side , then bonded them together to make a full width pattern. Then I copied it on the table saw. One of the most dificult piece of teak I had to make next to the companion way trim. My threashold was installed with three screws. There is a drip ledge that gets nailed down over the screw holes.
Dan What a beautiful job. That threshold looks very familiar. I used my table saw and some jigs to get the angles right. My biggest concern was the cut underneath that mates with the fiberglass sill opening. I wanted to make sure that it was not a weak point in the design, so I thickened the whole piece up by 1/8". This caused my crib boards to ride a bit higher, and interfered with the cover latch. That meant I had to sand a little bit off the bottom of the lower crib board. Did you retain the dimensions and angle measurements in any drawings? Unfortunately, I did not. That might be a handy guide for other DIY-ers who don't want to turn a $100 piece of teak into scrap!
I didn't keep any of the information, but I can probably reverse engineer it in next week. I too made this piece extra thick for more strength. I made new crib boards so it didn't matter. In fact, I made all new teak for the companionway so it all fits together.
Hey! Dan, With such a nice job, I understand why you get the nice goody ''training reward'' as per your 2nd picture. :-) Very nice result and quite a complex part.
