Has anyone removed the teak bulkhead separating the cockpit storage compartments from the cabin? I have some rot in the lower corner I need to either repair or replace the bulkhead. Is the bulkhead bonded in place or is it only attached with the Phillips head screws running around its perimeter? Can it be removed through the compartment hatch?
I replaced both last summer. Mine were held by screws only and were removed through the cockpit storage compartment. I tried but there was no way that I could remove them through the cabin compartment. You need to be a contortionist to get to some of the screws. My cockpit compartment constantly leaks so I replaced the teak bulkheads with aluminum.
I also replaced mine and Fleet is correct in that you have to do it through the lazerette under the cockpit benches. Mine also screwed into place. I used marine plywood and then came the mistake, I used the pre-glued mahogany veneer for a finished look. After the first season the veneer buckled up, not a big deal in a structural sense but that kind of thing just drives me crazy. If you want the finished look, do the right thing and either buy the ply with mahogany already attached or use good glue and attach it yourself.
Oh and you do get to meet any bilge monsters living under there too.
