Our outboard - 1984 Evinrude Longshaft - runs great, but the remote control to it is having issues. Does anyone else have one of these that has been retrofit to have the throttle & gear shift in the cockpit? If so, does the throttle cable on yours go through the hole created by relocating the Stop button?
In our case, the fitting that plugs that hole has worn down, and no longer holds the throttle cable in place, allowing the cable to pop free when we throttle up, which is very annoying.
I would like to replace that fitting (or the entire teleflex cable if required) but can't find a part number. Anyone able to help??
I have that exact motor and would also love to see how yours is rigged up, if you have the time to snap a few pics. I don't have any of the remote stuff on mine, just the straight hang upside down and try to steer while plowing into the dock style stuff.
Jimik, where in Canada are you? I am on lake Simcoe and will have the boat in Barrie from Thursday through to Saturday AM when we will be racing her to Cook's Bay. PM me and maybe you can get a real close look!
Alternatively, I can try to get some photos.
Basically the setup is that the Stop button has been removed, and relocated. The throttle cable is run through where the Stop used to be, and connects to a throttle lever mounted on the cockpit wall via the aft quarter berth. It works OK 7 out of 10 times however at critical moments (like when we are about to crash the dock) the cable holder pops out of the engine, dropping the revs, but leaving teh throttle engaged, and un-controlable unless I'm hanging off the transom, feeding the cable in and out by hand.
My hope is that replacing part #10 (IIRC) in the drawing above and adjusting the cable length will make the problem go away.
