OK, so I went out this morning and noticed that the tiller felt a bit loose....No worries figured it was just me. Ummmmm not so. Tiller split along the line of the 3 bolts and then i saw that the rudder has also delaminated. So any pressure on the helm started splitting the rudder apart and the tiller was also splitting. had two splits along two different plains...not good. So out came the boat tape, whit of course, and wrapped everythinig so i could limp home. Of course the breeze was perfect 12-15 SW! So my question is, where is the best place to purchase a new rudder and tiller. i went to CD and they seem a bit high, but if that is the place then thats where I'll go. Any input will be greatly appreciated......
THANKS!

There have been several threads on both subjects over the years. There have been a several inventive solutions for replacement tillers, but a laminated mahogany & ash tiller is the standard issue.

Mahogany is beautiful, highly weatherproof, and ash is very flexible. By laminating, you get the benefits afforded by each.

Some people have fashioned oak or maple tillers using two pieces of flat stock cut on a band-saw or sabre-saw in the desired profile and glueing/screwing them together. These will do, but will weather badly, and don't have the needed flex and will split and crack in a season or two. This approach is a low cost way of creating a "backup" tiller.

I'd either go with the CD tiller, or look on the web for another supplier like Defender, but you'd be well advised to replace yours with a laminated tiller.

The rudder is another story. CD offers the fully balanced rudder which is IMHO the best. Since it has a portion of the foil ahead of the pivot point, there is very little turning resistance even when you have to turn hard at 5kts.

You may want to post a request for a replacement rudder and tiller on the Swap Meet, or look around on eBay or Craig's List

So I'm guessing that CD is really the only place to order a new rudder. Do I go for the standard balanced rudder or the new HPDE version???

There are other places SJ. We split one in half on a delivery to/with the new owner and he was able to purchase one from Idasailor.

Lowell at CD is probably cheaper in this case but give these guys a call none-the-less. When we broke ours he had a return due to a mis-order that he couldn't sell as new. The new owner got it for a reasonable price.

I replaced my original [28 year old] broken rudder with a new balanced rudder from CD. It is made with hard-as-a-rock polymer foam inside with about 1/8" of fiberglass outside that and then gel coat and it should last me another 28 years, I think.

I've seen tillers in excellent shape at Bacon & Associates in Annapolis, MD, at Minney's Yacht Surplus in Costa Mesa, CA, and there are probably some also at Sailorman in Ft. Lauderdale. You could call each store and see what they have at a discount in your size.

Edit: added "fiberglass" to my engineering plan for the rudder... ridiculous without it!

I also believe it to be more "balanced" than the Ida, based on looking at the diagrams. It was a great improvement over the original--like power steering, with less flutter.

There have been a few reports of HDPE rudders snapping... Since CD sells both, you could ask Lowell, the owner, about their experience--I expect he'll give you a straight answer.

Where are you located? I had one split and I ground it out and filled it with penetrating epoxy then reglassed the trailing edge. It works fine but I ended up getting a new one becasue i like spending money... I could loan you my old one or sell it. I just would not want to try to ship it so give me you 20.

DD,

Located on Long island, NY. I spoke with Catalina and the mold is in FL. They can build me a new rudder for 6.6 boat units.

CD might get it from Catalina. You could ask them if they have it in stock. You'll have to mount your own pintles--a bit of a tricky task...

Correction. They are "Sailors" not "Sailers".

Tillers are cheap, rudders are not. Many Catalina balanced rudders look split but are not.
