...the USCG OUPV Captains License test following a 14-week (one night per week) course. Did better than I thought, given that the weekend before the test, when I planned to be cramming, was a nightmare that ruined that plan. My score was the highest in the group!
I'm going through the process (which still includes a physical, drug test, CPR cert., sea time records, etc.) for the license, to be able to drive this launch with up to six paying passengers as a volunteer at the Mystic Seaport--they've been needling me...
I couldn't give an unqualified endorsement to this process for recreational boaters--much of the information is a bit archaic, and includes the international rules, lights, and aids that we'll probably never encounter, as well as the inland and western river rules, lights, and aids. That's a lot of *&%^ing rules, lights, and aids! The charting stuff is interesting, but in today's real world, GPS changes the whole game. (Ya, ya--I know--some day the GPS might not work... so I'm gonna roll out a chart and get out my instruments to plot a course, figuring current set and drift, to Watch Hill Passage?? They did get into some useful radar navigation topics, and I have radar... Power Squadron courses are probably more useful and efficient for rec boaters.
Probably the best part was being in a room with professional and recreational seamen--the pros going for their Masters licenses--with an ex-career USN MCPO instructor, and talking and hearing about stuff (like the tug up on the rocks nearby). Will I go for the Masters upgrade some day (like Jim Baumgart has)? Just maybe. Why? Hard to say. Probably only if they want me to drive Sabino.
(Talk about a $+!nkp*+... She's coal-fired!)
