So it looks like next year Iris will be moving to Lake Ontario. At least there is an 80% probability of her moving down there.
And it lokos like there is an appetite for some Eastern Regattas.
BUT - every year when I raise thepossibility of holding an event in the Great lakes it gets lukewarm response.
SO if we move the boat down to the big lake, I would be willing to be part of an organizing comittee for a regatta someplace between a line drawn from Erie PA to Port Dover ON and a second line drawn from Cobourg ON to Rochester NY.
Is there anyone else that would want to join in and be part of a weekend event?
I am retiring next June and hope to make more mid-west Assoc. activities, including the Nationals next season. I have the boat, the tow vehicle, and the desire. Hopefully I'll have the budget to complete the endeavor.
One of my "bucket list" goals is to sail all the Great Lakes. This would fit in nicely.
"Pleasure craft are not allowed to go through a lock with a vessel exceeding 100 m (328 feet) in length, an oil carrier or a vessel carrying hazardous cargo." ...
"Except in the Welland Canal, special pleasure craft docks are locatednear all locks where you must tie up to await clearance to lock through.
These docks are equipped with telephones for reporting in. In the Welland Canal these docks are located at the Lake Erie and Lake Ontario ends of the canal only. (See page 8) All occupants must stay with the pleasure craft at all times in order to transit without delay.
Sightseeing at walls and locks is not permitted."
We go up/down the Trent Canal now. To run through the Welland, we wouldn't even have to take the mast down.
I'm looking at travel time as do-able within a week any place in that window, by water. Would be less than a day via truck, including de-rig and re-rig. Sadly, once again I am stymied when it comes to getting replies showing much interest. If we kept to PHRF-LO and PHRF-Erie, we wouldn't even need to re-rate boats.
As I said in another thread, it's the nature of the beast. If you really want to race OD, you need an OD boat with a local fleet, or an OD boat with a trailer. Around here, I'd buy a Watch Hill 15. (That's LWL with long, classic overhangs.) In the last place where I lived, it would've been a J-24 or a Sonar. In Minnesota, it'd be a Capri 25.
The downside of OD is you don't get the thrill of humiliating lower-rated boats--you just strive to beat the "better" sailors. Another downside is when you finish toward the back, you're really toward the back. (Don't ask...)
Yup. Around here (Lake Simcoe) its Olsen 25's and Tanzer 22's.
I keep thinking I should buy a cheap fin keel tanzer and gut it. We have 6 of them in my marina alone, 4 racing. One is for sale semi-locally for $1500. SWMBO would become ex-SWMBO the day that happened.
Our Association had the national regatta in Cleveland for two years (Eileen and I raced in it- 2nd place TR) and we would also love to see it come back- , and yes we would tow the boat to Rochester as we have relatives there and grew up there. Edgewater Yacht club was Awesome and Duane wolff Did an Awesome job of Organizing it. The next national regatta will be at Wayzatta YC. We will not attend due to time constraints. The National regatta does work its way back and forth across the country is as how it should be. We did have a great turnout both years though in Cleveland.

I wasn't thinking "National" although with time I am sure it will work its way East again. I was thinking more "Regional" although, to be honest I can't see much of a difference - the local boats are really the only ones you would expect to show either way. Minnetonka looks interesting, and time permitting, I'll drive up to crew. right now I just don't have resources to trailer the boat up there.
