Thanks for taking part in the new Owners feature.

We now have nearly 100 owners/boats (ok, so a few duplicates, I'll fix that soon)

Is Your boat listed (look for it here)

Then add yours to the list.

Joint Decision. (Sold)
PO C250WB 2005 Sail # 841.

Paul,

I can't get it to work. I tried many iterations of wild cards, and "any" options and it would not return search results. Might be a Mac thing?

The form is not browser restricted. I have tested it in IE, Firefox, & Chrome. Safari should be ok (because Firefox is ok)

If you perform a search and you get the notice (under the search form) ...
Total matches: 0, Starting at 0

Then you may have inadvertantly tried to search for a set that does not exist.
for example, there were no tall rig centerboard c250's registered today in florida.

If you click on the 'Clear' link, it will reload the page with all selections removed.

Then just click on 'Start' and you should see all records displayed, paginated of course.

Hope that helps.

Paul

Paul,
I would first like to add to the collective voice expressing thanks for your contributions to this forum. A database that can be readily queried offers much potential. Not understanding where the officers are going with this, i.e. what is the goal here, I have hesitated to throw out a wish list of additional variables that would be great or at least fun to follow....but I'm looking for a break at the moment, soooo for your consideration...Of course without knowing the purpose of the database these are simply random thoughts...I am only assuming for the moment that at least one purpose of the database will be to facilitate member interaction.

(1) identify the admirals (optional). The admirals are important to the success of the Association whether they actively participate in the forum or not.

(2) more focused spatial information, e.g. home port and/or GPS coordinates. Mailing addresses may not offer much information into where one actually sails. GPS coordinates would also open possibilities for graphics (e.g. google earth)later on.

(3) regional/environment classification. I've often thought that a very simple classification, such as marine vs. freshwater and North vs. South might be of value in interpreting recommendations posted in the forum. Many recommendations are region/environment specific. For example, what's "best" for sunny FL may not be optimal for those in more temperate climes. After cruising the forum long enough, one begins to associate each member with their location, but how to interpret recommendations may not be immediately obvious to the newcomers.

fwiw...

Gerry, they are great points, let me summarize them just to make my life easier (I'm a lists guy)
Owners - Admiral's info
Boats - Location (we're looking at including Lat & Long of normal sailing area and linking to a google map)
Boats - Environment - Fresh/Salt
Boats - Region (we kinda cover this with the locale (state) of the owner)

Other things I'm working on include:
Owners - Ability to edit their record and add additional boats.
Owners - Identify Members vs Guests

There's a few other things in the works, but why spill the beans too early

Paul, do you plan to capture whatever data is available in the "old" owners' list and convert it into the new one? We have a whole lot more than 100 boats there, and a lot of their owners might never participate in the new exercise. Of course, a lot of the boats probably have other owners now, but I'll opine that having obsolete data is better than no data.

David, the comments about the old data are valid. The snag is that we don't have all of the info about those owners, so it's really difficult to translate it. Of course, we could create a dummy owner (my apologies if we already have one ) and assign all the unclaimed boats, but then we would need someone to process the records... volunteering?

(Some of your "fresh" data will also <i>become</i> obsolete.)

What's the manual "process"? In the old file, you have a model, hull #, boat name, year, rig, keel, owner, city, state, and country. It seems everything transfers but the owner name--just put the whole thing in your "Last Name", with a flag indicating a converted and unclaimed record.

That gives you over 1100 records with a couple of unfilled items... Then you can overwrite the 100+ with your new data, based on model and hull #.

BTW, are you expecting everyone to update their "number of years owned" every year, or will you increment all of them automatically? This is why I suggested making that a "Year Purchased" field, and possibly adding "Year Sold" if we want to continue tracking POs.

Sorry--I'm just an <i>old</i>, retired database guy who doesn't know Java and doesn't <i>want</i> to.

Dave

The old 'data' is not really. It's manually typed in html code, and it's not consistant.

The new system associates Boats with Owners, an Owner will be able to be associated with multiple boats.

Hence my suggestion that the 'old data' be associated with a single owner. Your idea of a 'Claims' area is a good one.

And yes, the Year Purchased is one of the updates for the reason you point out.

I'll do a global update to convert years owned to year purchased pretty soon.

It's cgi, sql, javascript, jquery, html & xml

I'd like to begin by thanking the team who has spent so much time to develop and launch the new data base...it's a great improvement and the forum is better for it - THANKS!! - now, at the risk of incurring some wrath...is there any value in purging the data base? Members who are current in their dues are clearly entitled, but how many of those in the older list at one time joined and then lost interest/contact w/ the Association? Just wondering...

Some might date to when association membership was free to new buyers for their first year... Some owners might have lost touch... Some data is almost certainly obsolete...

My question in return is what do you want this data for? Do you want it to represent just the people who have paid their dues within the past year, or would you like to have an opportunity to find possible owners in your area whether association members or not, see a representative sample of how many 19xx _K _R boats were made, track down another owner of a boat like yours in your area, etc., etc...

Over the years, I've enjoyed being able to peruse the data on over a thousand C-25s (out of over 6000 built) in our records, going back to hull number 1. If you limit the database to current association members, <i>most</i> of that history and will be gone. The "old" data also included records for some POs, I being one... If you dump them, at least <i>my</i> old boat will still be there because its current owner is a member--maybe partly because of me. I don't care whether I'm in there or not, but if Bruce Ross didn't follow up with the association, would you prefer that hull 5032 disappear forever? (She wasn't there when I joined back in 1999 or whenever.)

It's easier to keep and maintain history than to create it.

I'm with you on this Dave, for several reasons. As a programmer I know that data is the most valuable commodity, most folks do not appreciate how much time it takes to enter or capture the data. You can replace a computer or the data input team, but the data is key.

Secondly, as you state, there are over 1,000 boats listed. That's a part of history. While I was maintaining the info, I would leave initial data in place when the boat swapped owners. Pedigree has an interest value.

Finally there's the curiosity value. Looking though the lists and seeing where sister boats ended up amongst other reviews is fascinating even for me. To the extent that my plans for the new system include "Boat's I used to own"

As I said, the biggest issue is the old data format being inconsistant, that's what makes it difficult to import. I tried! Lottawork!

Paul

BTW guys, we broke the 100 barrier (is there a barrier?)

Paul
