While serving as race committee on my boat (Great River Race) I noticed that my furled jib has some 'missing' threads on many seams. Further examination revealed that simply attempting to 'bend' / lift the seam resulted in a tear. Further examination revealed many spots that are split along the leach of the sail. I suppose it is time to replace the UV guard.

Anyone have some advice on how to proceed with resolving this issue?

Thanks,

Don

Did the actual fabric split, or did the stitching break along the leech and/or foot? I had some spots where the latter was happening and decided to get a few more years out of the sail by having it restitched. I had a local guy restitch along the leech and foot for about $65. After that you can worry about restoring some protection along the edge. The guy who did my stitching suggested that I spray 303 UV protectant along the edges, but that's on the list for the off-season. He advised against Sunbrella edges because their weight compromises performance and causes curling.

The fabric split AND the stitching is gone. My 'local' sail maker is suggesting replacing the cover with the original material (Dacron) rather than Sunbrella. Even though the Sunbrella will last for a very long time I have also heard that it is quite heavy and will affect performance.

I had a light UV cover added to my old genoa and got another year out of the sail. But the cost per year for a good quality Rolly Tasker new sail turned out to be less than the repair so I regret spending anything on the old sail. Your mileage may vary.
