Hello All, I recently rescued a 1984 Catalina 25 and am trying to get her sailing again. Been working on her on-and-off for about 8 months now and I'm missing one very important piece...the main-sail boom. I'm in the Stuart Florida/Hutchinson Island area and am looking for a boom. I know I can have one made for about $300.00 (give or take), but I thought someone out there in digital-Catalina-land may have a line on one. Maybe someone who is parting a Cat25 out or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is the only thing holding me back from raising the sails, which are very nice by-the-way. I appreciate your time folks. Oh yeah, not sure if it matters but it has a tall rig-30ft. Thanks very much.
Hello Dave, I believe it is too. I just thought I would stipulate. I measured the bottom of my mainsail sometime ago and it was right at 9ft...so I'm assuming the boom is 9 1/2 to 10 feet long. It appears that I have the original Mainsail as it has the Cat 25 logo and #1683 on the sail, but I haven't matched it to the hull ID# yet. But now I will. I had my sails cleaned and stored in the sail loft (my garage attic)...I thought about parting this boat out but spent $1800 bucks getting her pulled, cleaned, re-faired and bottom painted along with some small fiberglass repairs...she floats and has an almost new 8.0 horse Nissan Motor, so really it just comes down to cosmetics and shear will-power. The windows leak something fierce though, I am planning on working on that next and sealing hatches and a new companionway...lots to do and I just want to sail...
84 was a very good year! LOL Congratulations on your purchase. The "E" dimension is the same on both the standard rig and the tall rig C25 at 9' 7", so the boom length should be the same. There were 2 guys parting out boats in the forum here. Edit: I see that you found both of them. Good luck.
Yes Sir, I found them Dave...but no replies yet. We'll see how it goes...just anxious. I'm busy refinishing teak right now...but if I had a boom I would be sailing while I was doing it!!! Ya-Know?? Thanks for the congrats. I paid $10.00 for the boat and $1800.00 for the haul out and paint and $150.00 per month for my dock for the past 8 months or so and I can't even tell you how much for the additional accoutrement, but I guess it's not enough yet because I still have issues...but I still love my little sailboat. Can't wait to head to the keys. I'm shooting for a spring-break completion date...
I don't have the exact boom measurement here, but I know that it extends about a foot beyond the clew of the sail, which should make the boom, with end fitting, approx. 10.5 ft. long. Perhaps you'll be able to find a used boom in your area, and trim it down if it is too long. Due to the length, shipping will be a hassle if you get one long distance. It might help to buy the gooseneck fitting (hardware attaching boom to mast) from Catalina Direct to get the right size (diameter) extrusion. Have you called the factory to see if they can help you?
I did find a boom in Michigan sometime ago that I was going to buy and cut down, but I was unsure and the shipping was impossible, so I became resolute about driving there to get it, but all of that cost and time and I could have MAC Sails make me one right here in Stuart for $300-325 including the goose-neck and hardware. Colin at MAC rigged this boat last time it was rigged, for the PO. I just thought I might find a line on a good stock boom from someone here before I did that. I'm still hopeful and I have a little time, I'm currently working on several other things, teak, electrical, etc., etc. but it would be nice to be able to raise the sails and work on the rigging. I just like to see progress at a more rapid rate than is sometimes possible.
Thanks though for your input guys and thanks Gary for the clue on the boom length. It is 11'.
I have a spare boom in great condition I would let go for $200. Also, I am going to florida the last week of February so we could arrange a pickup location. I am going to the keys and will be traveling down 95 on the east coast. email me at czofchak(at) sbcglobal(dot) net
