“The Perfect Bay Sailboat!”

For sale is a 1982 Catalina 25, Tall Rig with a Swing Keel. The Tall Rig is perfect for those ‘light air’ days and the swing keel is perfect for exploring those hidden coves and shallow waters of the Chesapeake Bay. The “pop-top” convertible top (with cover) creates a truly spacious boat below and the large cockpit is ideal for a comfortable day underway and a delightful evening at anchor or the slip.

This boat underwent an extensive refit during 2008 and every system was inspected, upgraded or changed. Starting with brand new (2009) Rolly Tasker Dacron sails and a CDI “Flexible Furler”, the new sails perform and look great. A new ForeSpar whisker pole was recently added for those magical downwind runs. The old original rope-to-wire halyards were replaced with New England Ropes “Sta-Set X” running rigging and all lines have been led aft for superb single-handed sailing. Masthead sheaves were replaced and new spreaders were installed. A mast plate was installed to allow lines to run aft to two dual rope clutches. The main sail has a single set of reefing points and is rigged for single-line jiffy reefing.

The electrical system was upgraded with new switches in the original Catalina panel, new battery selector, two new Group 24 marine batteries, new dual battery charger (wired to the ship’s AC shore power), new energy-saving halogen and LED cabin lighting, new anchor and steaming light, and new in-mast wiring.

The interior is in excellent condition with all cushions recovered in dark blue duck cloth. Fully functioning marine head with 17 gallon holding tank. Head was completely rebuilt in 2009 and functions flawlessly. New “Sirius-ready” Jensen Marine sound system pushing 200 watts through Fusion marine “cube speakers” and an eight-inch subwoofer. Fifteen-gallon fresh water holding tank was removed and sanitized and all fresh water supply lines were replaced to the sinks in the galley and the head. The Nicro Solar/Battery powered ventilator keeps the interior cool and dry. The galley is equipped with ice box, sink, and Origo alcohol stove.

The Mercury 7.5 HP (2-stroke) has a new impeller, fresh oil in the lower unit, new ignition wires and coils, and a rebuilt carburetor. The Mercury is both manual and electric start and can recharge the batteries while under power. The seven gallon fuel tank is filtered by a Racor fuel/water separator.

The boat is equipped with an Eagle Cuda 250 dual GPS/Sonar that is connected to the Standard Horizon QUEST 1500 VHF which enables Digital Selective Calling (DCS). The Standard Horizon fully remote mic is installed in the cockpit greatly enhancing VHF communications. The new masthead-mounted Shakespeare VHF antenna and coaxial cable gives tremendous range to the VHF. A new Ritchie bulkhead compass has also been installed.

Two Danforth anchors, each with 200 feet of rode, cover almost any anchoring need. Lifelines and all fittings replaced in the Fall of 2010. Bottom was scraped, sanded and repainted in 2009. Keel cable and turning ball were replaced in 2009. Too many extras and spares to mention them all!

NADA book value is listed at $7,715 for this year and model in average condition. The boat is currently on the hard on Kent Island, MD. There is no trailer. Storage paid until April 30, 2011.

If you are looking for a great “Chesapeake Bay” boat that has had all the work done, this is the one!

ASKING $6,750.

Hey Tom,

You going to move up to a Bren boat?

What did you use to get the shine on your boat. Looks great!

@Peter, Thanks a lot! It is a nice boat and I hope to sell her to someone who appreciates her and will enjoy her as much as I have.

@Dave, We moved over a notch to a Tartan-30. I have three kids and a future ex-wife, so the C25 was just a little too cozy for any extended cruising. Once the kids are own their own, I'll probably go back to a C25... '89 wing, if I can find one!

@Gary, I'd love to have a "Bren" boat (for everyone else, Bren is a mutual friend who sold his beloved C250 and found himself sailing a Passport 40), but as you know Bren is independently wealthy, having struck it big as a "hand model" on QVC. I used "Poli-glo" on the topsides and it has held up quite well.

To all: It is with great reluctance that I part with "Lil", but it's simply too expensive for me to have two boats here on the Chesapeake. She has been a wonderful addition to our lives and has performed flawlessly. I will also miss the tremendous wisdom, friendship, camaraderie, and fun this forum has provided. You are all a credit to this great way of life we call "sailing."

Welcome to the Admiralty, Tom... Steve Milby, Frank Hopper, Sten Hillman, Duane Wolff, Stu Jackson, and (obviously) I still feel right at home! Some others have faded away gradually...

Thanks Dave. I will forever keep this forum on my "favorites" tool bar, but without the extraordinary depth of knowledge possessed by you and Frank and Sten and Stu, et al., I doubt I'll be able to offer much in the way of first-hand technical insight and advice. My decision to buy a Catalina 25 was largely influenced by this vibrant forum and, coincidentally, one the many reasons I am sad to part with "Lil."

I'll still be around and hopefully can find a topic or two to ask about or comment on. Thanks folks!

Ah yes... always the conundrum... the high demand for my hands doesn't allow much time for sailing the P-40 anymore. Besides, my agent said handling all of those lines chaffs my digits and puts my contract in jeopardy.

Maybe I can hire a minion such as you, Tom, to do the work for me while I lounge on the deck sipping my cocktail...

Dave,

I've already clued him in the forum! He is fine young man and I trust you will see him on here soon. It is a bittersweet moment to have "Lil" find a new home, but I take great comfort in knowing she is going to wonderful new owners. I hope she brings them as much joy and adventure as she brought to us!
