On teh good news side, we have another addition to our flock here. momma delivered a baby boy, and they came home safe n sound. That brings my crew up to...

SWMBO

1 girl in her teens

2 boys under 2

1 dog

13 Chickens

1 bunny

Despite sharing my home with all these individuals, I suspect I will be single-handling a lot of races again this summer. Oh well.
On the sad news side, a good friend and ex-coworker died yesterday due to complications from pneumonia. Since he was only in his mid 30's this comes as a bit of shock. He leaves a young widow (who is pregnant) and a 5 year old. The story is that he was too bull headed to see the doctor about a chest cold. His parents were immigrants who lived poor and fought hard so their kids would have a chance in a better place. Unfortunate all around.
Chris, congrats on baby boy and loss of your friend. I remember however taking my baby boy, now 26, on the boat sailing when he was just a few months old. Maybe we were crazy then but no harm ever came to him. I had only wished I had kept up sailing as he got older. Instead baseball and other sports took over. Now I sail pretty much with out my family. Yeah, Buddy, who is now 2 loves sailing as well, SWMBO is nervous about the kids being out in much of a breeze though, and if she says no, well thats the rule.
My daughter has a boyfriend (they have worked all the way up to holding hands...) and he has asked about going sailing with us though, so that might work out well. Two preteens and myself, nice, light and able crew for light air days. Now I need some chunky guys for heavy air races and I'm all set.
Congrats on the new one Chris. And sorry about your friend. For so long I never gave pneumonia it's due but my mom died from it and I've seen several people struggle with it. Nothing to mess with.

That's the full range of emotions, Chris--the "circle of life." Thirty-something is way too early. Cherish every day, and every child!

If you haven't had a pneumonia shot yet, by all means, get it. I have had several, and have never had the slightest adverse reaction to one. They reportedly protect you against 90% of the strains of pneumonia. They stopped my chronic lung infections, and I truly believe they lengthened my life.
Congrats on the baby boy, he and the 2 year old will be helping keep the boat flat before you know it. Meanwhile, build a sailing relationship with the daughter and her boyfriend, but give them time to themselves, too. Sorry about your friend. A year ago my wife lost her younger brother quite suddenly, he was only 53, same age as my younger brother. Scary!
Chris, Rita & I are very happy to hear about your new little boy, congratulations!
Regarding pneumonia, I've had it twice, once included an 11 day stay on an IV drip, probably the closest I've been to checking out. I was about 23 at the time I think. My fever was high enough that I was fighting with an Air Force major in the ER when my friends brought me to the hospital, I was an E2 at the time. She was trying to cut my clothes off to reduce the heat, and I wouldn't let her cut my Patagonia fleece (I thought I was freezing). I apologized to her after the fact, and she laughed it off. That fleece still has about a 3/4" cut in the left sleeve where she got her scissors started. My dad died from pneumonia, but his system was pretty compromised by the time it got him. About three weeks ago, I felt the tell tale rattles in my chest again in the late afternoon, took myself to the hospital the next morning and spent the next week on antibiotics. It's nothing to fool around with, and I'm sorry to hear about your friend.
Thanks for teh well wishes everyone. Now that we have had a birth and a funeral, I'm back at the office. Looks like the tail of january was rough on more than a couple families. Had 2 fatal collision investigations waiting for me on my return.
Ugh.
Anyway, baby and mom are doing well, 2 year old woke up with a tummy flu this morning, and the dog is acting jealous of the newborn. Its funny, when guests come to meet the little guy, the dog protects him, and herds visitors away. But whenever Mom and I have the baby, the dog is begging for pats and nudging us constantly. 'I'm here guys, don't forget about me..."
Chuck, our 13 Year old just got accepted to a school for the performing arts on Monday, following a weeklong audition/testing process. This makes me very proud, but what the hell!?! Mom and I both work in engineering, and fear feeding a starving artist - we are steering her toward set design/technical side of things so she has transferable skills.
Overall our January seems to be the ying to everyone else's yang. Even shovelling ourselves out of the driveway was nearly enjoyable last night, and the storm brought a welcome break from teh parade of visitors.

Now I enjoy watching the crew do it at my condo.
