Wow! Went to The Maine Boatbuilders Show yesterday, in Portland. First time. Highly recommend it. I saw more sailboats than in the past 5 years at the New England Boat Show. The craftsmanship is outstanding. There were fiberglass and wooden custom built sailboats, powerboats, canoes, kayaks and rowing boats with the builders right there discussing their work. Numerous manufacturers of boating equipment were also present. It's not held in some carpeted convention hall filled with potted plants but in and old locomotive railroad foundry with long and narrow hallways. Upstairs, you hear the creaking wood floor when you walk reminding you of days long past.
I particularly enjoyed the Marshall Cat Boat and a Beetle Cat. One vendor displayed his still working, 90 year old Whitney Screw making machine. It was fascinating watching screws being made. A composting toilet caught my attention and would be a great replacement except for the $900+ price tag. Finally, I met the founders and still editors of Good Old Boat, Karen Larson and Jerry Powlas. Wonderful people.
I had really wanted to go this year however business travel made it impossible. I have been told that you can see far more "useful" items at his show than at the bigger shows, and the workmanship of the boats -- and variety of boats -- is also impressive. So, add it to my 2012 to-do list!
