Any experiences replacing the bronze(?) sleeve that fits into the rudder hole where the tiller bolt passes through the rudder?

Is this a special order part from CD (it's not on their website) or is it a simple piece of bronze tubing I can easily replace at a plumbing or hardware shop?

THANKS !

Jerry

If it's just a bushing, pop it out and get a replacement at your local hardware store.

Jerry I looked at mine and it appears to be brass tubing that is flared at both ends. I think it is a fabricate yourself type thing. I could use a new one myself and will probably just get the appropriate size tube, Cut it a little longer than the hole so it sticks out on both sides about a 1/4" and flair it with pipe flaring tools or any round/cone shaped metal will do it. Or you can just buy a bushing like stated above but you will have to glue it in or if you don't glue it remember that its loose when you remove the tiller. The flared sides keep it in place.

Jerry,
I've noticed that the rudder "clunks" a lot when at anchor or on the slip. I'd quess that the pintles/gudgeons are worn out and there's a lot of slop in the joints. Please let me know whether that issue goes away when you replace the sleeves. (Keeps me awake at night, especially when snoozing in the quarterberth!)

Mine does the same thing. The pintles/gudgeons are worn. I securely tie the tiller when trying to sleep so it doesn't make any noise.

Bruce, Jerry's not talking about the pintles, He is talking about the brass sleeve/bushing that the bolt for the tiller goes through the rudder head.

CD has nylon bushings for the gudgeons/pintles that work well in both quieting klunks and taking slop out of the rudder.

I would like more info if you find something local. My rudder had an oblong hole from the bolt "sawing" thru it. The tubing was missing and I didn't know it. The larger than normal hole has now been filled with epoxy. But I would like to install a new sleeve.

Scott,
I see - got it. On the rudder connection to the tiller, I replaced my bolt and tube last year, and added a wing nut with a lock washer to the bolt -- it had been a nylon nut previously.
Dave, I too tie down my rudder with line or a bungy, but even so, my pintles and gudgeons are so worn, they still bang around loudly in waves. I'll take a look at those shims.

Learned a bunch today about bronze tubing...seems 3/8 OD is what is available, while the bolt requires 3/8 ID...the original bolt is a slotted all thread machine screw, I believe the tube is to protect the rudder from the threads...my plan is to replace the machine screw w/ a long shouldered hex bolt...thought is that the long shoulder should not chew into the rudder...time will tell...
