Sailnet has a Standard Horizon handheld VHF on sale for $109.95 (regularly $249.00), if anyone is interested. I have never owned a Standard Horizon, but some of our members seem to like theirs. If I didn't already have a functional handheld, I'd pick up one of these. This is a pretty good price as well, but you can find them for just a little more retail. A Google search turned them up for a maximum of about $124 and several listed for around $112.

Here's an independent review of them. I know mine floats like a brick (or at least I assume it does, it's pretty heavy), and a floating handheld sounds like a good idea to have attached to your vest.

I've thought about getting a handheld VHF radio, mostly to be able to hear the chatter out in the cockpit. A number of Association members have them for that reason and for may-day calls.

My VHF had external speaker wires available and I just hooked up a 3" speaker to it. I got a 4" diameter tupperware box that's held by velcro to the stern rail, and I put alligator clips on the speaker wires. One hole in the dumpster at the transom, and I got what I wanted.

Maybe a handheld unit will be on my Christmas list for the unforseen emergency in the future.

FYI, the current model is HX751. Not sure what changes are made to it, or when the model change was made, and no time to look into it right now. I've seen the 751 for about the same price as what is shown here.

My biggest concern would be whether the battery is stale if this closeout has sat on the shelf for a couple of years.

I have same but with GPS which I clip on to my inflatable vest. I really got it as I do sail solo and wanted some way to call out if I fell overboard-even though I also have a tether.
Another use is for my dinghy while motoring around Catalina Island. Again as a safety feature.

It looks to me like the only change made was the addition of a glow-in-the-dark band around the seam of the unit.

I have one the Icom M34 and I absolutely love it, powerful transmission and battery life is really good. Plus it floats.

FYI, I've decided to go ahead and sell my HX751. I bought it at the Annapolis Boat show last fall, and then over the winter decided to replace my fixed VHF instead. It it totally brand new in original packaging. The only thing I have done is to open the battery and charger to top it off a couple of times over the winter.

This is the latest model, not the older one that Sailnet is liquidating. It also includes a FBA-38 alkaline battery tray, so you can run it on 5 AA batteries if the Li-ion battery pack goes dead.

I'll put it up on ebay in a few days if there are no takers here. They're going for $130 and up on ebay, $140 on Defender (both without the battery tray).

I'll take $120 with free shipping to US addresses.
