It's actually the HIN but it'll look something like this CTYA0410_99. The 4 letters identify Catalina Yachts. The next 4 digits identify the hull number. The next letter stands for the month the hull was certified. And, the last 2 digits indicate the year the hull was laid. Sorry, doing this from memory and can't recall the indicator for the month my boat was built.
This is literally scratched into the transom just under the rubrail on the starboard side.
The first three letters identify the manufacturer (CTY for Catalina). The next five alpha numerics are the serial number of the boat, and with Catalina's, the initial letter of the S/N denoting the boat model (K=C25, L=C27,etc.)
