I am thinking about contracting the services of a professional rigger this year. I have done the mast raising and tensioning as described in the tech tips for 3 years now and each year I seem to end up slightly different helm characteristics and Heel under load. The only explanation I can come up with is inconsistent rigging. So here is my question. Are there any association members that are interested in helping me with rig tensioning this year (for a fee of course)? I would rather give the money to a fellow Catalina person. Is anyone interested in renting me their loos gauges (for a fee)? I have been tensioning by feel up until now. If none of the above what should I look to spend on this service from an outside professional? Lastly, am I putting to much thought into this aspect of spring launch? All comments welcome. Zip 48138

Surely one of your slip neighbors has a Loos gauge you could borrow. Check Ebay, you may be able to find a used one for a reasonable price.

Check your chainplates. Guy at our club had the same sort of problems, and was complaining that every time he adjusted tension, things were inconsistent. Then on a sail his chainplate came up on deck to say hello.

You may also consider searching out your PO (or mine - also on Grosse Ille) and seeing if they have any tips.

Thank you for the clarification. My SPO lives way to far away to do a consult. Keep the ideas coming though. Any thoughts on how much to pay?

I try not to say someone is dumb, just uniformed. Someone who is not a member of our Association would fit this.

The term professional rigger can be an oxymoron.

Even though I paid a rigger to make a new forestay - I wouldn't call him professional.
