I have a brand new Catalina 25 balanced rudder for sale, heavily laid up with epoxy resin and glass fiber over waterproof plywood core.
Five years ago I was asked to fabricate a new, balanced rudder for our club's 25', when the original rudder, 30+ years old, was lost in a grounding. I have professional skill and experience with woodwork and fiberglass. Since it was efficient of labor, I built 2 at the same time and I've been storing the 2nd. I'm gonna sell it because I don't want to store it anymore.
The club's has been in salt water for 4 1/2 years with no faults, checks or cracks. It vastly improved performance of the tiller autohelm and of the boat. The identical one I'm selling has never been in the water. It's been painted with 4 coats ablative below the waterline, maroon stipe at the waterline and white above. I used a clear cote which has yellowed slightly on the white.
Rudder is w/out pintles...if you buy it to replace an old style rudder the thickness is the same and you should be able to mount the existing pintles. I also made a couple of extra straight tillers and can supply one of these fitted if you're missing a tiller.
Construction is more rugged and durable than on the balanced rudders I've seen supplied commercially. I haven't taken pics yet but plan to, and I'll post them here if I can figure out how. In any case, if you're interested please ask and I'll get you photos. $385 obo, buyer pays shipping... or you could pick up for free in western South Dakota! LOL
Can anyone advise me how to put up pics of the rudder here on this thread, or, if there are instructions elsewhere on the site, direct me to them? Thanks!

OK, let's see if this works to get some pictures up
Here's the rudder showing the shape in profile. Length= 65", width at purple stripe = 11 1/4", width at broadest = 16 7/8", width at bottom = 14 1/4".
Full length with leading edge toward camera. Both the leading and trailing edges below the waterline are reinforced with many extra layers of epoxy and glass fiber. The waterproof plywood core was shaped by hand. This rudder is much stronger and more durable than layup with foam core.

Upper part of the trailing edge.
I have two straight tillers available, one laminated red oak, the other laminated yellow fir. The fir is the longer. I imagine most would prefer their existing tiller. Personally I prefer a straight tiller for use with a tiller autohelm. It's not as pretty, but I find the simpler geometry pleasing and a chunky tiller to mount the autohelm bracket reduces the chance of freeplay at that point. As you see, the rudder has been drilled for mounting. The pintles I used to place the holes were from Catalina Direct, the same hole spacing as original. All holes were drilled generously oversize, then filled with epoxy and glass cloth and re-drilled for the bolts. I'll work with any buyer so that you get the setup that serves you best.
This shows the rudder with laminated red oak tiller.
That was not successful. I guess I have to ask for more guidance. I have followed the FAQ instructions to post pictures and testing the links inserted between the square brackets. The links work but clicking on the image in the message doesn't seem to call them. The reply window shows "html off" and I guess it should be on, but I see no way to turn it on. Could one of you who have successfully posted pics assist me?
It's crude, but you CAN get to the pics this way: right click on image box in post. Choose "view image info". When that window opens copy the link starting with "http...." . Then open a new window in your browser and paste what you have copied into it. This will bring you to the Photobucket page with all the pics, but it will not select the pic you clicked on. You can view and englarge the pics on the Photobucket page, I believe.
That distance, vertical distance between mounting holes for the pintles, is 19", taken from the 1981 C25 club boat.
The oversize holes filled with epoxy and glass fiber are I believe 5/8", so that there is some room for small adjustments in the position of the 1/4" mounting bolts for the pintles, which go though the rudder, without having to redrill and fill.
If I can provide and further information, please let me know!
