FYI, everything's been great since we moved back to the old slip. The neighbors are glad to see me back again. We've backed into the slip with the current on two occasions since moving, and handled it with no problem. The 15hp motor really helps stop the boat when we need to.

I went by before work today to run an additional line across the empty slip to the other finger pier. The dockmaster walked by as I was getting ready, so I told him what I was doing, and to let me know if he has a boat for the slip so I can remove the line to get it out of his way. He just looked around at all the vacant slips and shrugged his shoulders with this "WTF" look on his face. So he's fine with it. This marina is very laid back about this stuff, so that's the reaction I expected.

My 15" teardrop fenders provide excellent protection against damage from the nearby finger pier. However, they quickly get a silver coating from rolling against the black floats under the finger pier, and over the season that silver coating transfers to my fiberglass. So my objective for this line is to minimize (but not necessarily eliminate) the rubbing between the fenders and the finger pier.

I have a tiny plastic midship cleat on my starboard cabin roof that I wanted to use it for this additional line because of its location. However I don't want to risk ripping it off the boat which could happen if the boat starts rocking violently. So I used a 1/8" clothesline (the idea being that the line should break before the cleat pulls off) with enough slack to allow the boat's fenders to still hit the finger pier (which should prevent the line from ever breaking). Then I made a snubber out of a bungee cord by knotting both ends to this line, and pulled it tight enough that the boat gets a gentle pull away from the finger pier under calm conditions, but would still rub against the fenders if it got a really hard push from wind, waves, or a person wanting to board the boat.

Have any of you ever tried something like this? Any pitfalls you can imagine?
