Here's a video generated by MacGregor that shows their 26' sailing off shore in high winds. .. . interesting commentary by the man himself citing not to try sailing a Mac 26 under high wind/wave conditions but nonetheless states the boat can cut it if and when it is called upon. Hmmmmm. Personally and IMHO it's all about who's at the helm.
I don't think I'd want to be out in those conditions in our boats, but I'm pretty sure it could be done. I noticed they have their hatch open, I definitely wouldn't do that, too much risk of being pooped and sinking.
I've seen that before and I'll say it again, in family-friendly language: POPPYCOCK. That wind might be gusting above 25 (if that) and that swell might be 8-10' with modest wind-waves on it. The warning flags are flying gently, and are a forecast--not an actual wind indicator. There is none of the spray you get at 40+ knots of wind--and practically no whitecaps. Just a breezy day on the ocean.
I'd probably try that in a C-25 before I'd try it in a C-250, I like the C-250 for lake and coastal but just not comfortable in anything over 15 to 20kts with any kind of sea in this boat.
I have to agree with Dave on this one...over 40 and it would start to have a bit more foam than that out there. I can tell you from personal experience the 250 will handle the conditions portrayed in that video just fine. You should have everything buttoned up tight, your sails well reefed, and pay attention. Exhilarating and fun fun fun! Exhausting though if you don't have anyone competent to spell you. Willy
