Looking around on Google Earth I see Redfish Island, looks great, lots of folks swimming, boats anchored out. Went to "Online Charts" and see that 10 ft is the depth of the area and most of Galveston Bay for that matter (bet it piles up quick in a blow!). Sounds like fun, wish I was there!
the first post in this thread has my email address. if you send me your contact information I'll add you to the contact list for the Houston C25 fleet.
That chart is out of date.. there is actually an island there now(with land). they rebuilt the island and the depth there is less than 10ft.. and yes most of GB is 10 ft or less... I tell my passengers, hey if we sink just stand up.. we'll be fine. :)
This is my second attempt to post this so if it shows up twice I apologize. I bought my Catalina 250 in March 2010 and have had it in the water behind my house on Clear Lake ever since. Have been trying to find other Catalina owners in the area for just as long. This is a great idea! Ken, I'll be sending you an email just as soon as I can. I would join you for the trip to Red Fish but won't be back for another four months from my current trip to Bahrain. Look forward to meeting you all in the future as we share boating experiences in the Galveston bay area.
Current status: Kent - motor wont start - trying to get it looked at before the 9th Ron - mast on his deck - not sure if it will be ready for the 9th Gary - hey.. you got a boat with a upright mast and a working motor... looks like we are all comming over to your dock! Greg - is your boat in sailing condition?
I told you guys to stay away from my boat! I went out last night for an hour or so and on the way in my motor was trying to overheat everytime I got it much over a fast idle. Maybe we can sit around and talk about what might have been!

OK... this is looking more and more like a dock party on the 9th... does anyone in Houston have a boat that can go sailing on the 9th?
Wow! This is one heck of a dilemma. I just checked in with my 20 year old son on my boat's status there on Swan Lagoon. Three days ago he lowered it into the water, cranked the motor, recharged the batteries, raised the sails to air them out and generally checked the boat over to ensure everything is good to go. Then he raised it out of the water and basically put it to bed, in tip-top ready to go condition and here I am 6500 miles away unable to take her out on July 9th. Would have loved to help out

Now that the mast work is done we took her for a test sail tonight (Sun). Everything went well. I'm not too fond of the LS outboard, but it should be ok until I get the XLS one rebuilt, at least as long as bay waters remain smooth. =)
OK... so Ron has a boat that can go... anyone else able to sail on the 9th? Or should be all meet over at Gary's slip for a meet, greet, and get to know each other social?
Well... Gary is booked for the weekend, I don't have a working motor, and we haven't heard from Greg since 6/21.. so it looks like a NO GO for a raft up on July 9th.
Well guys... you're not alone... Motor #2 died tonight on our way in. Luckily the cars crossing the Kemah bridge made enough wind to push us over to 3 Amigos. =)
I'll be out of commission until I get motor #1 rebuilt.
The Houston fleet is really off to a rough start. =/
I debated calling them Friday night, but we managed to sail into 3 Amigos, and a friend was sitting on his boat in the marina, so I gave him a ring. Now I just need to pick up a case of beer in return. =)
Too bad we moved from Houston to Florida! We have spent 30 years sailing out to Redfish and spending the night. Its a great anchorage for the prevailing SE winds.
Watergate used to provide 4 bottles of cheap champagne for what we called "The Great Redfish Races". They were a jackrabbit start (slow boats first, fast boats last, first to finish wins). Since all of your boats are Cat 25's, everyone starts simo! We sailed from Marker #2 (line was between #2 and #4), and out to the GBCA Marker "J" (the gas separation plant with the rectangular building on it). The forst boat had to put an anchor down at Redfish, and usually the second did too. Then we all rafted off them them and everyone went swimming in the center of all the boats and passed the champagne around! We all had cups and glasses that floated!!
I realize this note is moot now that its after July 9th, but here it is for what its worth.....
As you approach the island from the Clear Lake direction, there is a marker that will be near the north end of the island. Its shallow between the marker and the island. Its also shallow south of the island (towards Galveston) if you are too close to the island. Everywhere inside the curve of the island is find for anchoring. We like to anchor towards the south end since its flatter up closer to the island. Confetti draws 4'2" so there is plenty of water.
There is another very convenient place to anchor for a raft up without having to go all the way to Redfish, we used to simply call it the A-Frame. I have the GPS coord in the GPS pn the boat I will have to find for you. As you leave the Clear Lake Channel, follow the right hand shoreline till you pass the power plant water outlet, and go till you get towards the long clump of trees on shore. There is a reasonably large A-frame that you can see (it used to stand out a lot due to the large roof area on the west side of the house). Its a little harder to find now that there are more houses out there. The bottom is a grayish sandy mud and is excellent holding ground and not like the black thick gumbo that you usually have to anchor in. Its only a tad more than 1/2 way to Redfish, good sleeping when the wind is out of the south, and you can go it till you run aground, then drop a hook and walk around the boat with the sponge-mop to clean the bottom (wear t-shoes).
thanks for the note.. we ended up not going on the 9th because nobody had a working OB on their boat. Mine is in the shop right now. We are going to try again soon.

That A-Frame house belongs to my brothers, wifes friend. Spent a day down there last summer. I have the coords in my GPS.
It's a very weird house as the roof is coated in about 6 inches of some type of sprayed on foam. It has a huge deck on the second floor though that makes a nice covered patio for the first floor where the wind blows through the garage area.
I've anchored at Redfish a few times and it is a neat place to hang out.
