Ahoy mates, after years of abuse (the rudder not me) I'm thinking of painting my rudder. The question is what would one use for paint? I went to my local West Marine and all they had was top side paint, BTW I don't want to use a bottom anti-fouling paint. Any one know what to use? The boat is kept in the water about 8 months out of the year so it would have to stand up to being submerged.

Why not antifouling paint? It's designed exactly for your intended use.

If you want white paint to give it an "unpainted" look, Pettit Vivid is available in white.

I paint the rudder the same color as my bottom with the same paint.

Your rudder is going to foul right along with everything else on your boat that's below the water line. What's wrong with using antifouling paint on your rudder?

Bottom paint's the thing to use on the bottom of the rudder. On the top of my new rudder a year and a half ago I used Rustoleum, white, oil-base, high-gloss enamel.

Use white antifouling paint as it will reflect sunlight better than colored paints lessening heat build up in the rudder when out of the water.
