Just so you don't think the NE Catalina 25-250 sailors are not completely slacking, I went to the America's Cup race a couple of Thursday's back and took these pictures. I singlehanded Hajime to Newport and back (13 n.m.). I had a blast! Man was that port busy... I felt like my head had to turn like an owl. Was pleased to find that my inexpensive yacht club had reciprocal privileges with Ida Lewis Yacht Club.

As I watched the two massive yachts duel it out I suddenly had the impression that this was like some great offering dance to the wind.

Also, look who else was in port. They must have been preparing for the Trans Atlantic race.

Yup--that's Maltese Falcon, which will be in the Transatlantic. My lady's brother, son, and nephew have already started in the race to England, on Dawn Star, a Baltic 46. After they get there, they'll do the Fastnet. Other boats in the eclectic Transat field include a couple of Class 40s, one of which is Dragon out of Mystic. These are sort of miniature Open 60s from the Volvo--I'd rather go across on Dawn Star than one of those sleds! ...or even better, Maltese Falcon! (...except I don't know if that's really considered sailing.)

Wish I could've gotten over to Newport to see those amazing, big Js, but my new grandson was in town from Colorado.

Hey, would have loved to see the Maltese Falcon lower their masts to get under that bridge behind them. I know everything is done with a push of the button. Not sailing in my eye either, Dave.

The Falcon (air draft 191') can just barely clear the bridge over the Narragansett between Newport and Jamestown (206').

Dave, remember the post where they put sand bags or something to tilt the mast so to fit under the bridge? Got time to calculate how many the Falcon would need?

Too bad it doesn't have telescoping masts!
