I had an empty switch labeled deck light so I utilized it to install a 12 volt socket for charging cell phones and to run a small inverter. There were no wires attached to the switch so I just installed the hot line on the switch and grounded it on the bus bar. Since then both my anchor and steaming light are out!! I am going down tomorrow with a multimeter and some contact cleaner for the deck plug. I'm hoping that in my futzing around while installing the socket I just knocked the ground loose or something. Will a single 9 volt send enough power up the mast to light the bulbs even dimly? I'd like to get it fixed by the fourth if I can as we have plans to go anchor out and watch the fireworks :).

I have used a new 9-volt battery to test mast lights. It will light them up dimly, but that at least tells you the circuit is sending current to the bulb. I can't speak to LEDs, however. I also have made a tester by taping together two 6-volt lantern batteries and connecting them in series.
It is a 27 year old boat. No tellin where the short is. I have an LED battery operated light and run it up the halyard for an anchor light. Run down your shorts. Check continuity at the mast plug and power at the deck plug for each circuit. Could be your ground is not connecting at the deck plug.
Thanks for the advice. I'm back in business. It was the filthy contacts at the plug. Some contact cleaner and plumbers grit cloth for the male end and some contact cleaner and an allen wrench for the female end and I was backing business. Thanks for the advice guys.
