John Russell was lucky the other day; a neighbor caught him when his motor stalled while docking. No such luck for me. My 9.9 Johnson/Bombardier stalled as I was heading into my dock with a stiff tailwind. So I hit the iron lip on my slip and there's another nick in the gelcoat. This motor is only three years old, has been stored indoors during the winter and treated as well as I know how; but now it wants to hesitate on acceleration and stall at low idle. Nothing apparently wrong with the motor, but some of the online chats say the newer four-strokes don't work well with ethanol-blended gasoline or gas that has been stored in the tank on board for more than a month. Now I'm afraid to go out on the Lake Erie, but reluctant to ditch a new motor with low hours for a presumably more reliable Honda or Tohatsu. Anybody else have problems with stalling outboards for no apparent reason?

Same problem with my Honda 2 weeks ago. I had just added 2 fresh gallons of fuel to the fuel tank. I'm thinking I stirred up some water or sediment that got sucked into the fuel line. I just bought a Racor that I'm going to add to the fuel line, the 025-RAC-02 mentioned elsewhere on the forum. I'm hoping this fixes the problem, the fuel filter on the engine is a bear to get to. I always add Stabil, the fuel was 2 months old so it should be OK.

Think I'll stick with my 1989 8 hp 2 cycle Suzuki for a while longer!

If the issue is the fuel, you can probably make a huge difference by ditching the fuel (appropriately) and adding fresh fuel with some SeaFoam (from the store not lake Erie)

We had similar issues with our Generator, cleaned the fuel filter, ran with a significant % of Seafoam till it cleaned up.

Of course, you could just take the carb apart and clean it but I know how easy it is to mislay bits and pieces

I recently had to tear my carburetor apart due to water & rust in my fuel lines. It happened because of phase separation of the alcohol in my gas. I thought I'd done all the right things too, but my metal gas can ended up with a rust sludge on the bottom and I decided to just junk it along with the six gallons or so of Stabil treated gas inside it.

Tearing the carburetor down isn't terribly difficult, just make sure to keep all the bits together on a clean work surface. Once I had mine apart, I ran all the parts through my ultrasonic cleaner several times, and then blew it out with compressed air. Once bolted back up to my Tohatsu and connected to a clean gas supply and new filters, it hiccuped a couple of time, and only wanted to run choked, but 15 minutes of running that way seems to have fixed whatever that was. Now I can easily start it, run it choked for 30 seconds or so, then push the choke all the way in and run it at dead slow.

I tested it several times before I felt confident enough to take it out on Puget Sound. Like you, I have zero desire to be out on a large body of water with an unreliable engine.
