I noticed that the keel on my FK C25 had a slight wobble when I had it hauled out a few weeks ago. Is it possible to tighten the bolts while the boat is in the water, or will I need to have it hauled out? Should I even try tightening these myself or should it be left to a professional?
There's usually a little bit of water in the bilge, and the bolts are rusty. Any advice for cleaning the rust without damaging the fiberglass?
Hmm.... I would not do that while in the water. Safety first!
I think you have two possibilites:
1) if the nuts and rods are too rusty, do an bolt sistering (search this forum for more info
2) if the rods are still usable, break the rusted nuts and put in a new one
Anyway all this you have to do while the boat is sitting mainly on the keel - 90%
Then I suppose you have the famous catalina smile - visible crack between the keel and the hull so some fiberglass repair is then needed to prevent water intrusion to the boat.
Another possibility of the wobble is the rotten keel stub plywood core. If the plywood core is rotten, I would then also recommends to replace it too. Nothing it cannot be done.
My motto regarding the self reparing is: You do have the time or the money, you cannot have both :-)
