Does anybody know on a 81 iron fin keel if catalina(during manufaturing) put a sealent between the keel and the boat? Or is it just sealed by fiberglass? I have remove part of the rotted wood core from the bilge to replace it. ..Thank you for your help....Don

I'm sure other fin keel owners will reply here - but I believe 3M 5200 is SOP for sealing between the keel and hull.

I don't know how this relates to a C25's cast iron keel (drawing is for a C27), but it may give you some ideas. It appears Catalina abandoned wood in the stub and bedded the keel with a fiberglass resin mix.

The keel-hull joint and the hull-deck joint are the two (and probably only) places on a boat where 3M 5200 is the right sealant. Its misuse in other places has caused damage to two of my boats when I've needed to replace or re-bed things. (It wasn't me who used it.) Marine stores should not be allowed to sell the stuff except by prescription, written by a naval architect.

Don:

What Don Lucier says makes sense and I fully agree with Dave's thoughts regarding 5200 -- however possibly the best place to start is by calling Catalina Yachts and ask the question of the folks who built the boat. Make sure you have your hull number and type so they can zero into the corect year should (when) they made changes during production.
