Dave,

I seem to recall you completing your Captain's License rqmts ? Have you now been driving one of the museum's tour boats giving people tours of Mystic Harbor ? if so, any good stories to tell us ?

I drive on Wednesdays--1/2 hour trips, telling people about the seaport, the ships, and the area. Traffic has been light so far... 3-5 trips per day. (More people go on the catboat, but I don't have a sailing endorsement.) Here's my boat (and somebody who might look a little like me driving):

Come on up (down)--the Mystic Seaport is a true gem for kids and adults! And if you're here on another weekday, I can give you a more extensive area tour aboard Sarge.

(The Mystic Seaport is just below center.)

...and I bet you sing sea shanties to the passengers from shore to bleedin' shore!

Like this one, we ol' Cape Codders here sing around the house. We used to vacation often at Orleans, East Orleans, South Orleans, or Brewster:

Cape Cod girls ain't got no combs
Haul away, haul away
They brush their hair with codfish bones
And we're bound away for Australia

So heave away, me bully, bully boys
Haul away, haul away
Heave her up and don't you make a noise
And we're bound away for Australia

Cape Cod kids ain't got no sleds
They slide down the hills on codfish heads

Cape Cod girls ain't got no frills
They tie their hair with codfish gills

Cape Cod cats ain't got no tails
They lost them all in the northeast gales

I think Mystic Seaport is a real American treasure! But I guess I'm biased towards maritime history and lore!

Here's an unusual version of this song:

Cape Cod Girls sea shanty

Happy sailing!

Resolute, above, is a wooden 1917 Nat Herreshoff-designed and built launch for the WWI US Submarine Service. A few years later she became the tender for the Americas Cup defender Resolute, from which she took her name. She has one known sister-ship in the Herreshoff museum in RI.

Her current propulsion is a 38 hp Westerbeke diesel, amidships, that makes story-telling to the passengers in the aft cockpit a bit of a challenge. (Folks on shore hear me too.) The shifter is a rocker-pedal on the cockpit sole, and finding neutral is tricky--it took me a while to comfortably dock her without lurching between F and R with my foot. But I've got it down pretty well now.

Good fun!

I worked under a manager a few months last year who many (25+?)years ago owned a high-end interior decorating shop that was located on one end of "the" bridge in Mystic. She said her children always headed straight for the shop after school to sail from the dock out the back door. Sounded like a nice way to grow up.

Dave (sung to the song above)

A few weeks back we went out your way
Haul, haul away
Saw you and Sarge headin' down the bay,
Haul, haul away.

Got a friend who's there in Mystic land
Haul, haul away
He's got a 28 Hunter, ain't that grand,
Haul, haul away.

In Mystic yard out east of town
Haul, haul away
And his lady fair sails in her gown,
Haul, haul away.

I waved to you like heck and blew my horn,
Haul, haul away
When we saw you and Sarge headin' down,
Haul, haul away.

You had com-pa-ny in tow that day
Haul, haul away
You were out to lunch, so you missed my hail,
Haul, haul away.

Hope to get back there pretty soon this fall,
Haul, haul away
With my wife in tow, I'll give you a call,
Haul, haul away.

We'd like to sail on your touring boat
Haul, haul away
After five martinis do you think we'll float?
Haul, haul away.

Our new International Association Poet Laureate!

I was probably just on Ch. 13 on the river (for the two bridges and a couple of commercial vessels)--I often don't remember to start scanning 9 and 16 till I get out on the sound.

Sarge standing by on 9, 13 and 16 (maybe).
