Thanks to this forum where a number of you have recommended a Tohatsu 9.8 HP 4 Stroke engine (same as Nissan and Mercury), I also ordered that engine online (as many of you have done).
It arrived safely, I saved some moneys, it fits much better than my previous Yamaha 9.9 HP engine, it runs great and I'm a happy camper.
However yesterday after having owned this wonderful engine for about a month I started to have issues.
Long story short.....
The motor came with a new gas can and gas lines and connect to the new engine. Wonderful I figured, fresh clean gas tank and clean lines.....I was thrilled as I hadn't expected that freebie.
CAUTION:
If you notice your gas line bulb squeezing down while the engine is running and/or it appears that your engine isn't able to get enough fuel the problem most likely is the quick disconnect that's right on top of the gas can that came with it.
That quick gas disconnect union it turns out on the male fitting side has a small ball bearing and spring (creating a check valve to prevent fuel from running back) as well as on the female connector side a V-shaped plastic piece (with a spring behind it as well) that is intended to push against the metal ball thereby moving/opening the metal ball to allow gas to pass.
My quick disconnect fittings created an issue within a month of owning it and I can see that most of you WILL eventually have a problem with this design over time.
So word to the wise....if you are seeing a lack of enough fuel symptoms...... it's most likely the quick disconnect (not the one on the engine) right on the gas tank).
There are a number of ways to fix that issue including eliminating the quick disconnect and installing a male thread x barb fitting in its place (which may or may not be legal in your necks of the woods).
So for those who purchased a Tohatsu, Nissan or Mercury engine and received the gas can with a quick-disconnect..... be aware of this possible issue as it could take you a few wasted hours to figure it out.
