"The clink of an anchor - chain, the 'Yo-Ho!' of a well time crew, the flapping of huge sails - I love all these sounds."
Good question. I went into their web site and found only one compass, some type of hand-held I guess. Nothing else and no indication of how to order repair parts for older compasses. I wonder if they are still producing marine compasses?
I have a cracked one, I found a new one at my local Catalina dealer and was so excited, got it home and it was too large. I think the only hope is old inventory. Does your seem to be the same size as mine?
Frank, Thank You, It looks like the one on your boat, I have no Idea at this point of size BUT I am going to the boat this weekend - and can measure..I will get back with you.. Thanks for your input.. Alan
Frank, Yes that is the one that looks like mine in your picture. The OD is about 5 1/4". The 6" OD will not work, BUT THANKS for the offer. Any Idea of other Outlets? Suunto does still make compases but not this one... at least as far as I can find... any other outlet ideas would be appreciated.. Thanks as always..
I'm also looking for the Navman's (now Navimo) instrument covers which is square 112 x 112mm. Problem is its no longer available as a spare part and the industry standard is 110 x 110mm that does not fit. So I came to an idea of sewing a simple cover from the same material as my spryhood and biminy - navy blue acrilic fabric (sunbrela) with a rubber on the edge (or rim? Sorry for my poor english).
Thanks, I have found a phone number for Suunto and am going to call today today to see if they have a source or any left in a backroom closet! I would guess that there might be a chance to find it at some sail garage sale. Tom, have you pulled your boat out of the water yet?
I called Suunto and spoke with them, They were of No help as they do not make the unit anymore. They refered me to Andrews Compass who services Suunto, He advised they did not have any as the unit has been out of production for 10 years.., But he suggested that I have a sailmaker put some cloth over it with snaps or velcro... That is probably what I will end up doing...
Meanwhile, cover the whole cabin top and part of the cockpit with a 10x8 tarp. A guy in our marina ties one off the the mast al the forward lowers in front and bungees the back corners to the stern rail stanchions. Stretches out nicely and covers the whole companionway in addition to the cabin top.
If you took a picture and the dimensions to a canvas maker, it would be easy to make a cover from sunbrella. I would use snaps around the outside edge to attach, instead of velcro which will deteriorate quicker.
Look into molding rubber. Use the old one as a pattern and cast yourself a new one. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain. It would be a great project to do with the kids. You can find molding supplies at Hobby Lobby and there is a ton of books on Amazon. I have a book called "How to cast small metal and rubber parts" by William Cannon. Excellent book. Being a little nuts anyway, I would be inclined to mask around the comapss with packing tape...big area. Spray 6 coats of PVA on the compass and I would spray it with gelcoat, make a fiberglass cover using polyester resing from an auto parts store and fiberglass mat. Paint the outside and your good to go.
