I just finished watching a documentary called THE COVE on netflix. It is about the Japanese slaughter of dolphins on Taiji.

I would love if more people watched it and passed along their opinion on the subject.

This is not a movie for kids. It is a crude documentary the images speak for themselves, even if at some point you disagree with some of the film makers opinion.

If you don´t have Netflix: http://thecovemovie.com/buy_the_dvd.htm

I do think as people who enjoy so much of our time on the water we should try and do something.

Have a great weekend

The Japanese massive inshore fishing industry has long blamed dolphins, not over fishing, for depletion; a similar documentary was made in the 1960's, and the behavior has not changed. This documentary was made 1-2 years ago and accurately reflects the local culture. It merges with their "research" on whales. Their "research ships" take and slaughter a huge number of whales, pick off a few tiny tissue samples and sell the rest since the remaining tons "would otherwise be wasted". We all do some bad things, but Japanese behavior in these arenas is unconscionable.

I've seen the documentary also and it IS sick. Thank God very few places in the world have a similar attitude/behavior towards these amazing creatures.

Yup, saw it a while back. It is disturbing, but a very one-sided presentation. Similar to other "Shock-Docs" I wonder if there is more to the story than what meets the eye. I am willing to bet that if you put a herd of cattle underwater when you went to butcher them, the blood would be similar, or that were we present back when the Native Americans did their "Buffalo jumps" we would be equally appalled. Everyone eats something.

I understand the one sided point of view and I agree that everyone eats something.
But if you use modern methods for the "herding" shouldn´t you use a more modern approach to the killing?
Wouldn´t it be at least more humane the make sure you kill the dolphin with one "blow" instead of just stabing them time after time?
Also, why do it in the far away cove? Why not just have a "facility" where you haul the dolphin out of the water and make the kill as clean as possible.
I am sure a "slaughterhouse massacre" documentary can be as shocking.
But still why not create a dolphin farm instead of just grabbing and herding passing migratory dolphins.
It is not the I specifically disagree with the Dolphin killing, I am no Vegan and love my steak and the occasional Sushi, So who am I to just criticize they "choice of meat". It is the method and scam like trickery that I disagree...

Am I too far of?

By all means I don´t want to make this a political debate. I am just trying to make up my mind before I decide not to take my kid to SeaWorld just because it feels like they are not doing what they were supposed to...

I would compare this to herding and slaughtering Great Apes or Orangutans, etc. These are not cows, they're way up there in degree of intelligence and deserve a higher status in my opinion.
