Steve, I live at the north-east end of San francisco bay. Up until this year I've been a lake sailor at a lake about 40 minutes from the bay. In November I finally became a "Bay Sailor". I'm not at that marina though. I actually prefer not to be too close to san Francisco itself ( nasty city, tons of homeless panhandlers, don't need my kids near the barbary coast sort of entertainment.) I have my 250 berthed at the Vallejo city marina at the north east end of san francisco bay. I kinda miss clear water, but hey, brown is a nice color too ! Especially after the rainy season the bay gets a lot of wash down from the delta ( Sacramento area.

Gary,
I am sure there are preferred areas to be around the SF Bay area, I would settle for any part of it. It must be great having that fantastic bay to sail in. I was glad to see some 250's in the area. I did not plan well this time but my next time up I am definitely going to charter a boat for a day. My dughter moved to Sonoma after three years in SF. The California coast has so much to offer sailors, How long does it take you to sail out to the Golden Gate?

I saw 2 250 in the SF Yacht harbor last time I was there. There are several others around the bay. Some in berths, some dry sailed, and many like mine on a trailer in a lot or at home. I can sail out of Alameda, Richmond, or Redwood City Marina in the south bay. We also sail Monterey Bay and up stream into the delta.

We have a sail-in trip planed for May to South Beach Marina with tickets for a Giants Ball game. The marina is next door to the ball park. The bay is a great place to sail although the 60+ knt winds we have had tent to jeep us off the water. Next time you come out let us know and we might be able to set something up.

Doug,
thanks,...yes I saw that marina on the internet and realized it was close to the stadium. The Rates their are $25 cheaper than my slip at Canyon Lake! Unbelievable. Yeah, the weather is not cooperating for us either...we had scheduled a trip out to see the Whales from San Francisco Bay thios past Saturday....they cancelled due to the high winds and seas...We went out to Point Reyes Light House yesterday to try to catch a glimpse, the weather was better and there were a couple of power boats out there...pretty big swells though. Absolutly fantastic views but we did not get to see any whales, we have one more chance to go try again tomorrow before we have to return home if the weather is good. We did pick up 3 dozen oysters at Hog Island Oysters in Marshall and they were fantastic as well....

Steve,
I was at the South Beach Marina last year with my C 25, and saw a 250 that looked like it was in a permanat slip. They are there. Our club is planing a trip for Feb. Probably starting at Ballaina Isle Marina, going to Angel Island and South Beach. We will do the trip mid month, if you are in the area again let me know. I know I have a 25 not a 250, but our group is still friendly we even let the Mc Gregors in. A couple of our club members have boats docked in the bay, and one in the delta.

You even let Macgregor's in? How magnanimous of you. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

If you were planning to go on the whale watching trip with the Oceanic Society I know which boats you saw. I took the trip in May from the same place. We saw several whales and also picked two Biologists off the Farallon Island. No dock, they drop them from a boom into a small boat which brings them out to the bigger boat. One instantly got sea sick and spent the rest of the trip in a corner the other one spent the entire return trip describing what she had been working on for the past 6 weeks. Great trip.

Glad you liked the oysters, Tamalis Bay is another nice place to sail. We have done a Labor Day trip their with the Santa Rosa Yacht Club, you can boat or shore camp on the other side and hike the hills around there. It is a high tide launch though.

Give us more warning the next time you are coming to the Bay area.

Doug,
Yes that is the one!, we did spot a few whale spouts from the Point Reyes Light House, I am sure the boat trip is much better, what a fantasitic view!. I will definitly send out a notice the next time we are in the area. I love Texas but our coast just can not compare to California. I lived in Galveston as a kid and sailed both in Corpus and Galveston Bays, nice for Texas but no where near the beauty of the CA coastline,
