I've been following the forum for about a year now and learned alot in the process. However this is my first post. I haven't seen my question addressed and I don't find a direct response in the archives.
Question: How does one go about replacing the turning ball at the aft end of the centerboard trunk? Mine won't turn.
By way of background: My boat is 1995 WB. I've had it two seasons and sail it in the lakes of Oregon. The PO sailed it twice in Puget Sound for a week each time, but other than that it is fresh water boat. The centerboard has always been difficult to raise. At the end of last season the steel cable failed near the connection to the head of the centerboard. I have lifted the boat from the trailer enough to get access to the top of the centerboard to cut and remove the remnant of the swage fitting and wire from the top of the centerboard. I took the opportunity to check the movement of the aft turning ball (not the block near the connection point to the centerboard) and find that it won't turn. Probably partly explains why the centerboard has been difficult to raise and perhaps contributed to the cable failure. I see Catalina Direct has a replacement part which includes two turning blocks on a frame. Installing the part is supposed to make future replacement easier and, of course it should address my current problem. Anyone had luck with freeing and lubricating the turning ball? Anyone done the repalcement? CD also states that the turning balls should be replaced every couple years, though that strikes me as overly frequent, based in part on the lack of discussion about replacement in this forum. Thoughts?
Thank you for asking the question... look forward to suggestions from this esteemed forum.

Henk, there's a link on that page to the drawings that explain how to do the mod.
I was agreeing with you, the pics of how to raise the boat on the trailer enough to gain access to the turning ball would be really valuable. I don't have any, but would like to see them.
Yes... I would love to find out the best, or for that matter, any ideas to, safely, raise the boat sufficient from the trailer to allow center board work
Surely someone on this forum has experience, made photo's, outlined the procedure and/or archived the information somewhere
Here's a former post on raising the bow. My reply is the 9th one down. I used a rolling floor jack directly on the trailer with wood blocking under the bow.
