Event: Lake Havasu Pocket Cruisers Convention 2012
Place: Lake Havasu (California/Arizona Border)
Date: February 13th thru 20th 2012
Expected Weather: Mid to hi 70s with light but consistent wind.
As I write this there are 171 boats registered, representing 54 different builders, from 24 states, 3 provinces and 5 countries.
The event was founded by Sean and Jo Mulligan in 2008 as an informal gathering of 13 Montgomery boats. Each year the event has grown, 20 plus the second year, 70 plus in 2010, and in 2011 there were 139 boats registered, 127 showed in over 25 different class sailboats along with about 20 boatless sailors. What is making this event so popular?
Well I think that the article in Good Old Boat Magazine by 2011 participant Larry Yake says it all:
Last year there were a number of Catalina and Capri’s that were among the 127 boats that showed up. This coming year Sheila and I believe we will add to that number by trailering our Catalina 25, Ho’ O Kolohe, to Lake Havasu for the event. From Larry’s article we can’t think of a better way to spend a week in February than being in the warm sunny Southwest trying to decide to cruise, participate in fun events like the poker runs, attend seminars or even participate in one of the informal fun races. It sure sounds better than the rain and cold of central California. This event is open to all sailors so come and enjoy the fun.

Scott: I went last year and it’s a highly addictive event. Even the wife loves it. If you can, take part in Dave’s early bird BBQ at Steamboat Cove. Raft up Saturday night and enjoy the BBQ Sunday. www.sailhavasu.com
The fun though is in the journey... add San Diego to your itinerary and the gas to get there and back does not seem too bad. Besides... where else can you sail & play in dead winter??
