Well, it is finally going to happen, a short three hour race on one of five Americas Cup 12 Metre yachts. This all happens in Philipsburg, St. Maarten on one day of our anniversary cruise aboard the Freedom of the Seas. The five yachts are composed of Stars and Stripes(55)and(56), Canada II, and True North I and IV. The race is named: The St. Maarten 12 Metre Challenge. No sailing experience is necessary, they say, so it really should be a blast. There are three experience 12 metre race crew per yacht and the other nine are just us common folks. Just being able to crew on one of these yachts is a racing persons dream be it a perfect race or fiasco. I done both on Catalina 25s and 250s.

I'm drooling with envy. Well done. I just dream of getting to St. Maartin someday. To sail on a 12 meter would be icing on the cake. I was in college in St. Petersburg when Charlie Morgan, founder of Morgan Yachts built a 12 meter boat (the last of the wooden hull boats). I had an opportunity to see it up close but that's as far as I got.
Edit: I remember them saying that the main winches were about $5k each, and that was in 1970 dollars!
That sounds like a blast! I've been to St. Maarten back in the early 80's while in the USN, but I don't think the America's Cup boats were there back then. Plus I wasn't all that interested in sailing yet.
I did get to see a bunch of AC boats in San Diego in the late '80's. We were doing surveying for Driscoll Boatyard which needed dredging before the boats could come in. I got to see about half a dozen of them very-very up close from our Boston Whaler we used for the project over a period of several weeks. Very-very cool.
Jerry - we did that a few years back when they only had 3 boats. It's amazing how close to the wind they sail (the windex points directly fore & aft!). We were on S & S 55 and got into a tacking duel with 56 - were just going to finally cross them when the jib sheet snapped...
