My 86 full keel and bottom are being painted. Not sure, but was told the keel is lead/steel, mostly lead, and may need a special paint due to the dissimilar metals. Am wondering what the keel is made of, ratio of metals and painting tips for Florida Gulf waters. Any help? I'm a new forum user and must say this is a great site! Also not even sure this is a "Capri" model. She's a poptop with the dinette on the port side. My first full keel!
The '86 C-25 "fin" keel (Catalinas don't have "full" keels) is fiberglass-encapsulated lead--a thick encapsulation. Paint it exactly as you would the rest of the bottom.
Wait... Capri?? Let's figure out what you have here. Do you have a full hull ID (starting with CTY...)? When we get that straight, it'll help if you put the information in your "Signature" within your Profile (link above). And questions specific to the Catalina 25, Catalina 250, or Capri 25 should be posted in their respective forums here so the people with those boats will see them, and confusion will be minimized.
First, welcome to our world! Congrats on the new boat, and finding the best place for owners on the net!
Did the Capri have a pop top? I thought they were more "sleek".....
We should be able to sort this pretty quick. Google Catalina C25 and Catalina Capri 25....start looking at the pictures. You'll notice the Capri is more sleek, has a different cabin shape, wider side decks and cabin layout is much different from the C25's most of us have. Our cruiser slugs have roomier cabins, smaller cockpits, most have pop tops.

OK! Thanks for the correction and the info about painting. The shop I had working on it jumped on it before I could say anything....their painter said it was glassed in and painted it all one color/one paint type. I can see I have a lot to learn, and a lot of work ahead! I've updated my profile a bit and guess I'm on my way to the Cat 25 Forum!

The values are probably lower for a Capri.

CTY = Catalina Yachts K = model (C-25) 5216 = 5216th C-25 built. (One of our members here has #0001.) A = hull came out of the mold in January 6 = ... in 1986 86 = model year
Ken - welcome! We have sister C-25's I think since I have a 1986 also and it's hull is 5250. I didn't know how to interpret the full hull number so now that Dave has explained it, I'll have to go look my own number up again to see what month is her birthday. These folks are fun, and oh so helpful.
