I also noticed that the auto inflate PFDs at Defender, at least some of them, are selling way below the cost at WM. Right now, I have a WM4000 auto-inflate PFD. My spouse does not wear one for the 5-10% of the time she sails with me. We rely on our PFD vests for those that need a PFD while onboard and those we bring into the cockpit usually stored at the transom under the tiller. However, I was considering testing my WM4000 in the bathtub in the next week or so, cleaning it up and re-arming it and then my spouse can wear that when we go out. I was considering buying one of the Mustang 3184's auto-inflate w/HIT arming kit (hydrostatic valve). These are very expensive but Defender has them on sale for way below the cost sold at WM...something like $70-$80 difference !!

I received a Bass Pro Shop flyer this week. On the cover is an auto/manual inflatable vest for $74.97 and inside the flyer there are 2 other models for $109.99.

I've practiced with my life sling several times and I like it. The problem, IMO, with the auto-inflate sling comes if you should miss with the first throw. The sling will hit the water and inflate making re-deployment more difficult. It just won't have enough weight for its inflated size. It'll be like thowing a balloon in the wind.

And, it will become one more piece of equipment that will require periodic safety inspections and re-arming. When was the last time you checked your fire extinguisher?

Defender definitely has some great deals: Auto inflate WITH harness, $90. We are looking for a pair, and likely will go with those, best price so far.

They will only ship UPS to Canada. I asked if they could ship USPS if they remove the CO2 cannister. Haven't heard back.

UPS charges exhorbitant fees at the border.

Larry,
Thanks for posting this. My wife and I were just getting ready to buy PFD's for ourselves. Decent foam adult PFD's are $35+, and because of the comfort issues involved, may not always be worn. Defender has auto-inflate PFD's for $70. Yeah, that's twice the price, but we might actually wear them more often. Something to consider, and to suggest to my wife.

(see, I'm not ALWAYS cheap!)

Defender just replied to me - Good service to get back so fast.

quote:
Chris, Unfortunately my shipping department tells me it’s going to be a no-go this time around. The canister on this particular item is one that’s sewn in and has to be replaced through a service center once it’s set off. It’s not something they would be able to remove as we’re not an authorized service center for these. I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help this time around. Have a wonderful weekend, though, we appreciate you thinking of us for your order! CassyDefender

If the cannister is sewn in, it makes me wonder how you test it, or equip it for a redeployment. I have never had an inflateable lifejacket though, so maybe I'm just ignorant.

Last night I decided to bite the bullet and purchased the Mustang Auto-Inflate PFD 3184 Model. That's the one with Hydrostatic Valve and harness rings. End of last summer, I purchased the standard LifeSling Model and attached inside the cockpit against the port transom stanchion/supports. I sometimes use in that position to rest my back against when running with the wind.
