I have Signet SL172 digital depth sounder and SL267A digital knotmeter on my boat. The depth sounder works but is hard to see readout. I can't tell if the knotmeter is working at all. They have been left in the weather with no cover and are in need of some serious TLC. I would like to know if anyone has experience with: 1.)Sending the units into Signet to have them worked on 2.)Ordering parts and fixing them yourself. Thanks,

In 2004, the LCD display on my Signet SL267 speed/knot log started fading and became unreadable. I sent it in to Signet Marine for an estimate on repairs and they came back with a quote of $277.00 to fix it.
Along with the repair quote, they suggested that it really wouldn't be prudent to repair this unit because some other parts are no longer available and if in the future they failed, I would be looking at a new unit. They offered me a trade in credit on a new display leaving me with the option of repairing the broken one for $277.00 and taking my chances or paying $335.00 for a brand new display. In my opinion, for the relatively small cost difference, it didn't make sense repairing the older unit.
After weighing everything, I decided to go with another brand instead which was a bit cheaper, matched my existing depth gauge, and came with a few more bells and whistles (water temp and NMEA).
These instruments are large and are probably not hard to break into and fix. If they're just like everyone else's, then they probably work fine and just need a new display. I believe Derek bought new LCD displays from Signet and fixed them himself. It's a much cheaper alternative to having Signet do the work. I'm sure they charge for "inspections, shipping, cleaning....."

I'm sending them an email to confirm.

Not a bad price. If you know the LCD's part number/manufacturer, you might be able to get it from an electronics supplier for a lot less.

They quoted me "at least $75 each" as "they had to be soldered in place and it was a tricky procedure". My friend dissembled the guages and found that they were just "push in" type. I ordered the replacement LED's for about $15 each and fixed them myself!

I may just pull out the LCD this weekend and take it to a few electronic stores to ask them about a cheaper alternative.

quote:
Signet is happy to repair things for you, even the old stuff, and you can preset a spending limit so they don't go beyond what you're prepared to pay without going to new. I think they also give a decent discount if you replace your old with their new.
They are good sending parts too, I've replaced a couple of the LCD displays (on the depth meter they are plug-in, on the knotlog they must be soldered in..) A bit pricey, but available and they fit.
My only beef is that they will not provide schematics for those that may possess the skills to try DIY repairs and troubleshooting.

quote:
What's the problem with the one you have? If it's just a blacked out display Signet is still in business and can supply replacements. On the sounder it's a simple plug-in module... oddly on the same series knotmeter it's soldered in.

I bet the soldered LCD could be installed by your local electronics store for very little money. Just take apart the gauge down to the old LCD and let the store handle the transfer.
Moor Electronics provide a cheaper alternative that fits in the same hole. Check Defender's site.
I'll probably bring home my knotmeter and do a DIY.
