You could email Minney's Yacht Surplus in Costa Mesa, CA and ask if they have two of the genoa cars (slides) that you choose. They are very helpful at Minney's and have loads of each sailboat part. With your request you could email them a catalog photo of what you need. They may have genoa cars without the stuff you would need to cut off, too!
A year ago I bought two genoa cars with standup blocks from their store. I think each was $14 or $16, instead of the full price of $100 or so, each.
You should give exact dimensions of the inside of the slide, so that it will fit on your genoa track. I believe my track is 1" wide. That 7/8" wide slide in the link you gave would not fit on a 1" track.
Or write to one of the companies that make the cars (Ronstan, Schaeffer)and try to buy 2 without the loops. You might just get lucky. The spin pole car shown above probably would not make a good candidate for conversion. I've got the same one and the ring and accompanying weld are rather big. I'm selling it in the swap meet section as I no longer have a use for it.
For the aggrivation, etc., I'd just buy the slides from CD. Unless you can find used cars/slides somewhere, you're looking at investing $30-40 in hardware anyway. Why not spend the $70 and get something that is purpose-built, and has the added feature of the quick removal pins that are strapped to the slide?
I bought the CD cars last year and they are very well made and work great. If you look closely they angle in slightly to match the angle of the side deck.
