Funny (almost not) dinghy story.

We spent the weekend at an island in Tampa Bay. We took our two dogs, which we normally do not. Because, well, it’s just a PITA. Anyhow we took them this time, and that means ferrying the dogs back and forth to the island for potty time. I own two inflatable dinghys, one which is newer and smaller, and an older one that I use, to work on the boat, wax or do anything that might dirty it up. Because of the dogs, I towed the older dink with us. At the end of the day we anchored, and took the dogs to shore for a break. We came back to the boat, grilled some steak and ate dinner and fed the dogs..

So now it’s time for another potty break. We load the dogs into the dink and head for shore. By this time it’s about 11pm. The winds had picked up and there was a little chop. We get the dogs to shore, they do their thing, and we start to head back. Did I mention the wind had picked up? I start rowing, and one of the oars breaks right at the paddle part. Then the other oar does the same thing. We were still close to shore so I get out and try to figure out how I am going to get two adults and two medium sized dogs out to my boat which is anchored about fifty yards offshore, in the dark, with a head wind.

The only items we had with us were the life vests that the dogs were wearing and their leashes. Necessity is the mother of invention, so I fashioned the dog’s vests to the oars with their dog leashes and rowed like a mad man back to the boat. Didn’t have a camera at the time so here is a few photos on my dock recreating the mishap.

I got a lot of funny looks the next morning from other boats as we came ashore with two bright green dog life vests waving from the oar handles. Besides that, it was a great spring overnighter.

Glad everyone was OK. I'm amazed that both oars broke at the same place, and at the same time. Guess it's time for an outboard?

Hmm - I woulda thought about a 2-dog outboard right about then. Do they come when your wife calls them?

What I suspect happened, because of the now larger waves, as I rowed away from shore, the oars hit the bottom. And, I have two outboard motors, but didn't think I would need one for just an overnight-er.
