Maybe that is what they teach in engineering school but in real life it gets a bit more complicated and I'm talkin about on much bigger boats. There are the 5 Whys ?, fishbone diagrams, causal analysis, etc. This sometimes involves failed parts assessments, critiques and sometimes contractor support all to get to the root cause of the deficiency. Sometimes the magic bullet is never found but turns out to be contributory causes.
After that is all done, months have passed by, mucho dollars spent...then we use duct tape or WD-40 !!
