JD is now nearly 7 years old. Our Boat US insurance just dropped from $1,100 a year to $400 a year!

We had called Boat US and asked if there was a reduction for a boat kept on a trailer. Their reply. We have been loyal customers, no claims, and we keep the boat on a trailer instead of mooring or slip. Certainly.

Happy trails!

Paul

I have insurance through BoatUS and am quite happy. My gulf coastal rider used to cost $30 a month for my snowbird winters and now is included in my coverage with no additional charge - $197 a year. Just like my boat insurance, renewing my on-water towing and trailering insurances is a matter of clicking the options I want and paying the very reasonable bill.

My cost is similar...under $200 thru Boat US. I think I have $300,000 liability covergae based on marina rqmt. Factors for cost would obviously be age of the boat. But other factors such as mentioned regarding trailering but also the waters and area you sail. For example, if you keep your boat year-round in an area prone to hurricanes, that would be a factor. Also, if you sail in the ocean, bay or river would probably also be factored in.

I had a weird situation just at time I bought my boat back in Fall 2005. I purchased the boat and decided to keep it in same marina and same slip. I had paperwork to fill out and when I went in to pay, the question came up if I had the insurance in place. I indicated that that Boat US wanted to wait a couple of days until after the hurricane that was headed up passed the area and then would process the insurance. The marina mgr indciated I could not stay in the slp since the PO already cancelled his insurance. All I could think of in this situation as it was materializing was what was I to do...go and anchor in the river some where until the insurance was processed !? It reminded me of this garbage barge that was in the newspapers as being off the shore of Staten Island and it could not find a location to accept the load - It was travelling back and forth in that general vicinity until issue was resolved. I felt like the garbage barge. So...I told the mgr I would get back with him and he deduced I was going to leave my boat in the slip and not show up until the hurricane blew by and so...he then offered to call Boat US and see what he could do. Turns out they informed him the hurricane had taken a turn away from heading our way and they now could process the insurance if he could electronically forward some photos. We wnet down to the boat, clicked off some snapshots and i had the inurance coverage by the end of the phone call !!

I called my insurer a month before the renewal date and mentioned that I'd be checking around for pricing with other insurers. I asked whether there's any way to reduce my rate. All of a sudden they came up with three strategies:
(1) let them know my US Power Squadron Rank - higher the rank, better the insurance rate
(2) send in a copy of my vessel safety check form - done and done
(3) let them know I keep the boat hauled and in the yard for more than 3 months of the year - send the receipt
I got a 30% discount right then and there!
