In 45 days all of my photo postings will loose their photos because Apple is shutting down its hosting Gallery. I originally thought this was to happen in April but the Apple site says June 1 now. For those of you who are new to the site I say this only because I have a lot of photos which can be used for reference purposes on the two types of 25 I owned, the '82 swinger and the '89 wing. I doubt very seriously that I will put them up again somewhere else but they are all downloadable from the site in my sig. When I first joined this forum I downloaded every thing I could from the documentation files here, some may find my photos to be handy if they compile the ones they want on their computer. Remember, every picture tells a story.
(For you old members I apologize for arrogance of thinking this really matters.)
Frank, thank you for alerting me--I was just showing my wife your site this morning so she could see some of the things we could do if we bought the boat. They are truly amazing. One question--the bed that folds from the two cabin seats--is that only available on the '89, or did you do that to the '82?

I did that to my '89 and was very pleased with it. You do have to manuver over the corner to get forward but at 300 pounds the quality of sleep was well worth it. I was very comfortable in the quarter berth and my wife had the double in the salon when we were both on board. I does not fold but worked and stored very well. Let me know if you want more of an explanation.
I strongly recommend that all of you new folks download Frank's photos if you haven't. His documentation is excellent, and he has probably done something that is at least similar to most things you will likely want to do, and he did it properly.
Frank-I too will be losing my Apple gallery pictures and web site, but there are a lot of FREE picture gallery alternatives out there now. Try Google Picassa or Flickr. No reason to lose great photo documentation.
Krobsten - OMG, another C-25 in Stratford! Very cool.
I've used Flickr for-EVER for my photos. I don't know when Yahoo is going to pull the plug on the service, but somehow I gotta believe they're not very long for this world. Meanwhile, I have a 1.5TB backup drive and a zillion DVDs with my original photos, so all I need is a good card catalog, database or asset manager for my photos. Anybody know of a good piece of shareware I can download???
There are some nice, inexpensive commercial sites available that offer far greater flexibility in presentation. My biggest objection to the free sites is the distracting garbage they present all around your pictures, as well as the limitations in image size.
A good one is pBase (www.pbase.com), but the one I settled on is Smugmug...
...and I'm quite happy with it. The "Power" level account, at $60. per year (about 16 cents per day) provides unlimited storage capacity, unlimited usage, and far more options than I'll ever use. I set up some galleries with a variety of their off-the-shelf themes for our Lions Club pictures, trying to show our members some options, and some users have produced their own custom templates, but I generally just use the basic default theme. Uploading is just a simple drag-and-drop from Windows Explorer or My Computer (I'm sure it's the same for Mac users), and you can arrange the sequence of images in the galleries any way you like. Couldn't be easier. I'm not very interested in how my own site looks, but I've seen some that are stunning.
When I'm done with the work currently in progress I'll upload some of the photos I've been taking of my own Cat-25 renovation project, but here's the entry URL for the various images I've uploaded from around my community and from some of my recent vacation trips, just to give you an idea of what you could do:
panza.smugmug.com
(just click on the "thumbnail images" to transfer to the various sub-levels, or click anywhere on the path string near the top to back-track up to previous levels)
(NOTE: this is the actual URL, which is simple to provide to people when I'm telling them how to get to my site; the "http://" prefix isn't usually necessary - most browsers automatically prepend it when you type the abbreviated version into the address box - but the software this forum is running on doesn't recognize this as a link, so you can't just click on it in this posting. Select, copy and paste into your browser and it should work)

I retire in 23 work days and will attack rehosting things then. My frustration is I bleed Apple and the integration of iPhoto is what has made photo hosting so simple. Years ago I used my cable provider's storage for some photos and it was horrific. When you are an Apple person it is hard to jump through hoops for anything, we are to used to things just "working". One pain in the COX storage was that I could not delete an entire folder, I had to delete photos individually... oh hell no. I still am waiting for Apple to tell people they have recanted and everything will be OK or at least to simply let things go on with no new users; a person can dream. (Now that Ming the Merciless is dead there is hope!)
Indeed, Apple has always been known for user friendly products. I think Wall Sreet expectations are a factor here . . . neat idea but not enough margin.
Thank you, that is very kind. I allow downloads to provide them as public photos. You are welcome to put them up and use them as you like, as is anyone. I am sure I would utilize them as well.
The way I read the recent Yahoo 1Q announcement, Yahoo will soon pull Flickr and put an end to it. That means that Flickriver.com will also be gone soon. If you're a photo buff, Flickriver is awesome. If you have an iPad or iPhone, you might like Instagram as well.
I just found out that I have an MS App on my laptop called Windows Live Photo Gallery that allows you to create detailed metadata about your photos, such as subject names, locations, dates, keywords, etc. This allows you to create collections using common keywords.

Bruce, where are you docked? As for the picture organization, I can't help there--I use iPhoto on a Mac. Mostly, though, I store them on external drive.
Rob and Kristen I'm docked in Milford harbor across from Spencers and Port Milford. How about you? Brewers, Housatonic Boat Club, Breakwater Key, Macs Harbor or Pootatuck? The town also rents out a few ball moorings south of the Route 1 bridge as well. We ought to plan a get-together. Bruce
