Do we have any boats on Sandusky Bay? I've been invited to helm a Precision 23 in their first National Championship there and I'm looking for a little local knowlege.

My boat is usually on Sandusky Bay but we're probably not launching this year. What would you like to know? I don't race there -- or anywhere -- so I won't be any help in that regard. When will you be up here? If your kids (or you) like amusement parks, you'll be racing in the shadow of Cedar Point. Said to be the largest "ride park" in the country. In the order of Six Flags or Busch Gardens.
The bay is relatively shallow. The race course is in about 10 - 12 feet of water. The good news is that when Lake Erie is too ugly to sail on, the bay is pretty well protected. There's real skiiny water at the outlet of the bay to Lake Erie. So, the bay is protected from the ugliest of the lake on nearly 4 sides. There's a channel to the lake and it gets much like a washing machine on busy weekends. Dominant winds seem to be west-northwest except when I want to head for the lake. That requires of heading of 60 degrees from my marina and that's usually where the wind is when I want to go that way.
Do you know which marina wyoull be sailing out of? If it's the Sandusky Sailing Club, that's about as far east on the bay as depth will allow you to sail. It's directly across from Cedar Point. If you're sailing out of the Cedar Point marina -- Good Luck. I wouldn't want to fight the amusement park traffic every time I wanted to sail. Battery Park marina and the Sandusky Yacht club are also nearby. My marina is on the other side of the tracks -- literally.
Kevin Burke (Panhead1948) sails there as well. He lives a bit closer than I and certainly knows the area better than I. If he doesn't respond here, you can probably reach him through his Forum e-mail.

Drinking isn't my favorite sport. There are other islands to visit.
The Coast Guard station at Marblehead (the peninsula that forms the bay) is the busiest station in the country. Put-in-Bay is a big reason.
We used to keep our boat in Sandusky and I've raced that area many times over. I took a look at the info online for your rendezvous - they really only list the SSC as a launch point and the sponsors of the race. It doesn't specifically say in the bay so you could be racing around the islands or have a fixed mark course out on the lake. If you have the NOR and can confirm I can get you more details about either.

If you are bringing the family to PIB I'd recommend getting the kids off the Island around dinner time.

A ringing endorsement if ever I heard one.
Kelley's Island is right next door, family friendly: During the day, check out the glacial grooves, and hang out on the north side of the island at the state park beach. Nightlife is a bit more subdued. PIB, I haven't been to in 10yrs due to mardis gras atmosphere.
PIB is fun as an observer (I gave up ETOH to leave some for the next generation. ), but definitely a semi-adult destination. Kelley Is. is a great family destination.
We vacationed around the Bass Islands. Think our favorite place of the entire trip was Scudder Marina in Pelee Island - one of the most peaceful marinas we've ever visited.
Truth be told, we were headed back to Sandusky from PIB on a Friday afternoon - many, many powerboats zooming towards PIB - looked like party time. Still a fun place - you can rent a golf cart, visit wineries, Perry Monument.
I'll be there for 3 days in mid-August. No kids - just Pete the boat owner, Suzanne my regular genoa trimmer and me. I'll see if there's an NOR published yet, the preamble to the event doesn't state where the regatta will take place. Thank you all for your info and advice - hopefully I'll have some definite questions to ask later.
