OK, so I decided to ship my old titanium bike to myself and stop riding the Dahon folding bikes - which are great for short distances and easy to store on the boat in their bags, etc. 26" wheels and sitting up top makes a difference when going more than 10 miles or so...
But then I found out that I am getting old and the last mile or so was miserable.

Enter the ultimate solution. A rechargeable electric motor kit. $400 and installs in 3-5 minutes. No bike shop required. I even bought a trailer and it still propels me at 15-17 sans peddling. Faster when I peddle. Changed my cruising life. The Dahons are for sale although they too could be converted to electric...

www.cleanrepublic.com

I have no relationship other than I bought their product. I was pleased with the presale, but the wheel was a bit out of true and the attitude of the service rep was less than optimal, but the product works awesome...

Its a great product Red - just one caveat, check you Highway traffic act for the definition of a motorcycle and a human powered vehicle.

Around here motorized and electrified bikes are still considered bikes as long as there is a way for them to be powered by a person. If the pedals are removed, the bike is considered a motorcycle and you are required to have full motorbike gear and licensing for it.

I don't know the laws in other jurisdictions.

This is getting to be a fairly common problem for us with folks who have had their license pulled for DUI and then buy an electric scooter to get around. The cops pull them over regularly to see if they are a DUI, and if so, they can expect a load of fines if teh pedals have been removed. If not, the police are powerless.

The pedals are very much functional and I pedal when using the assist. Yes, laws do vary state to state... And yes, you could get pulled over. Pretty inconspicious, looks like a drum brake. But the laws in most states currently do not regulate electric bikes, this prompted a whole slew of DUI Bikes in Floreeda. They look like scooters, but have pedals. Not quite what I am looking for. This just keeps you going momentarily when you get tired. Still gotta pedal sometimes..
