Hello Board,

I have the old bilge pump pictured on my boat, which is very leaky and old. I'm thinking of replacing it with a new one from Defender. Has anyone done this, and if so what did you use?

Thanks!

I have the same. Guzzler 400H manual bilge pump. Get this repair kit from Defender or WM a fix it easily.

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1%7C51%7C299222%7C84462%7C316439& id=161502
or
http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=28974& catalogId=10001& langId=-1& storeId=11151& storeNum=50632& subdeptNum=50633& classNum=50637

Its just all about cleaning and replacing those rubbers. Easy task.
DPO lost the handle so I'm now creating new one. Problem is that the pump pin has some imperial outer diameter 20.7mm (dunno what it is in inches).

PS: If you were buying that service kit, would you mind sending one overseas to me? I think it could be possible to put it into some big envelope. Problem is that shipping costs from these eshops is too high.
I can pay via PayPal

My boat came with a new pump that I put in. I think the new one is a 500, too. Those flathead screws on the outside were a total pain in the butt to get out- I wound up putting a flat bit in my electric impact gun, having someone hold the other side with vice grips, and beating them out. Put some never-seez on them so hopefully if I ever have to do it again it'll come out.

Make sure the new one has the 1" in/outlets. Mine has 1.5". I just adaptered it, but guzzler sells new ends for about $10 each

Thanks for the advice, guys.

I had to adapt new hose to mine as well -- basically by wrapping the ports with teflon tape.

Tomas: I'm ordering you a rebuild kit and will PM you for instructions.

I used these adapters, if the teflon tape isn't working out for you, theyre pretty cheap: http://www.mcmaster.com/#48315K75

Well, I got the rebuild kit, but the fasteners for the bilge pump are completely seized. I think I'll have to cut through the little posts with a hack saw to get the thing out of there. After that it looks like the screws can be pushed out laterally, but I won't have anything to mount the pump to again.

Ugh, guess Tef Gel wasn't around in those days.

I'm tempted to just buy a portable bilge pump for emergencies and rip out the darn built-in stuff.

Or maybe I can rebuild it in-place. One of my goals was to pump out the forward bilge, and there isn't any hose running to there. Guess I could run some and have a permanent solution.

Before you go the rip it out route, try some PB Blaster on the siezed hardware to loosen it up. The longer you can leave it on, the better chance you'll have of it working. I've had good success with this stuff on old engines and other grumpy nuts and bolts, and Paul (britinusa) just used it to get his rudder connections undone.

You should be able to find it at any parts store.

Daniel, my bilge pump was sized too. Problem is that the tube is aluminum and the screws are SS. That aluminum was badly oxidized and therfore almost impossible to unscrew.
The key is the proper screwdriver size and havy duty pliers. Except of one screw I was able to remove them all.
If it does not help you, then get a handsaw and cut the posts near the screws inside of the locker.

Good luck.

PS: If you decide to let it go, please send me that replacement kit
