As usual we in the PNW were rained out of the latest astronomical event so I've been looking at photos others have taken. This one by NASA is just stunning. It was posted by Phil Plait (Bad Astronomy) on Discovery's website:

Stunning.

You didn't leave room for any of the rest of us to say anything that's appropriate. Stunning!

So how about inappropriate?
That is a wonderful photograph of a nonevent. I am amazed at the quality of the photo. I do not understand marveling at circumstantial events. I am glad I saw a solar eclipse in about the 5th grade but nothing astronomical has impressed me since I studied astronomy and understood that any given astronomical event is a function of your position and time. We have satellites that can show "us" transiting the Sun anytime we care to see it.

Transits of Venus were what allowed us to first accurately measure the distance to the sun. They're not common, this past one was the last one till 2117 (sorry OJ), the one previous to that was in 2004. Read the Wikipedia article I cited to learn more about their periodicity (sort of a 100+ year / 8 year cycle that repeats every 243 years due to the differences in Earth's, Venus' & the sun's orbits) plus lots of other details that I find fascinating.

As a sailor, I find astronomical events interesting simply because you can learn so much from studying them and understanding how what we've learned impacts everyone's lives. If you're interested in this like I am, I recommend reading Timothy Ferris' "The whole shebang: A state of the universe report" and "Coming of age in the Milky Way". Both are great reads, and present the topics in an easily readable narrative.

Ah to look up and smell the Roses!

Wonders of nature occur everyday in the macro and micro, but their beauty never disappoints me.

Thanks for sharing the photo.
