Previous owner seems to have lost a turnbuckle or two. Need to know size... looks like it might be a 5/16 for the capri 25. Is it?
Also the main sheet was some crazy kind of quadruple purchase. Either way it looks completely flat on one sheave. Triple purchase sufficient for this? This one had 3 sheaves top and 3 bottom plus a pin (that's 4 right)? Anyway it had at least 1 more than my Capri 22, and I always thought the 22's was overkill.
Bought a battery (electrical seems simplistic, but functional, and new). Can't find an antenna for the VHF he mounted (shakespeare, and just missing the mast not the mount).
Is it normal that these boats don't have a steaming or an anchor light?
My turnbuckles are 5/16", but note that I suspect most of my rigging is "non" factory standard that was changed by previous owners. My main sheet is a 4:1, but again not factory standard. The Capri diagrams on this website indicate a 4:1. My experience has been that with a 4:1 the main sheet load can get pretty heavy in high wind, but that is the trade off for fast handling I'm sure. My boat only has a bow light and stern light, nothing on the mast. My electrical panel indicates a mast light, but no wiring is attached. Maybe the mast light was an "option"? There is no indication on my boat that one was ever installed.
Ok, if I read this correctly 5/16" is the size. Looks like they used the same parts as on the Catalina 25. Ordered a 3:1 and 4:1 convertible mainsheet traveler (Harken). Nothing fancy, but it'll get the job done. the 3 bull blocks each side for the old mainsheet seemed like unnecessary overkill (6:1). The Capri 22 I had, comes in a tall rig, that is 1ft shy of the height of this, and the same size boom. I don't think the load is any greater, but I can go 4:1 if needed, will probably use 3:1 most times though.
Meanwhile I found that there were parts missing to the traveler. Looks like the cheek blocks weren't installed on the car. Fortunately it's a brand new traveler, so I ordered them $33 later I HOPE I have what I need.
Also, got rigging tape, split rings, mylar sail repair tape, and sailkote. Got the boat registered today too!
Now it's scramble time. Just got word Beer can races every Wed night. Darn, I don't have enough hours in the day for this!
Oh, looks like the boat was Awlgripped some 20+ years ago. Original color was light blue. They awlgriped the hull white. Found out when I went to compound the hull (whoopsie). It's OK I waxed it instead, looks dull though (and has light blue showing in a couple places). I am gonna sail her ugly this season, and attempt fixing the paint come fall.
Anyone have any suggestions how to remove/repair awlgrip, and repaint? How about removing ablative bottom paint? I'd like a smoother bottom, and to VC17m it. Just want to know the best way to do both. I'll be doing the work myself, probably come fall.
Follow up... The catalina 25 5/16" turnbuckles are the same ones on my Capri 25. The cheek blocks did not work, so I have this: instead (for now). Note the position of the turning blocks on either end (they are lower than the traveler). I moved those up as well. I changed the straight shackle out to a heavier anchor shackle to get the cheek blocks at the same level.
Also figured out which traveler was installed. It's a Midrange CB traveler and car, but the car is really not the right one for the boat. Now if I have to spend $200+ for a new car, the question is, do I get windward sheeting? I kind of like the continuous line stuff now, but I DO always forget to lock in my leeward side of the traveler before I tack, and it seems to consistently drop to the end of the track with me fighting it back up in the wind.
Finally the running lights are fixed, but the bulbs were trashed, so I got new bulbs today, hopefully I'll have functioning running lights this evening.
Did you get the turnbuckle squared away? The boat we just bought has the closed turnduckles and it was my preference to switch over to the open turnbuckles. The first set I had did not thread propertly on the shroud end so I ordered another set from another supplier only to have the same problem. I am back with the closed turnbuckles. rrr.
